    *Sinner 6-2 6-2 0-1 Cerundolo

Italian eighth seed Jannik Sinner stays calm though, putting in two good serves and waiting for his opponent to error.

Juan Manuel Cerundolo strikes the net and that's deuce.

  2. Break point Cerundolopublished at 20:52 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Sinner 6-2 6-2 0-1 Cerundolo

And to Centre Court we go where Juan Manuel Cerundolo has finally come out of the blocks, bringing up two break points against Jannik Sinner, his first of the match, early in the third set.

In fact a lot of the outside courts are rounding things off for the day.

It's very, very dark in south west London. Soon it'll only be Centre Court that has action on day one.

    Halys 6-2 6-3 Evans*

Former GB Davis Cup captain on BBC TV

Play being suspended is the best thing for Dan Evans. He absolutely needed that. He wants to rest on it for a night and hopefully the Frenchman will get a bit tight. For two sets he has dominated this set, suffocated him and Evans has had no idea what to do.

Brilliant serve and volley, and aggressive tennis, but overnight, things can change.

  5. 'Super proud of myself'published at 20:49 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

Let's hear from Sofia Kenin, in her on-court interview:

"I'm super happy, I can't even talk. Coco played a tough match and I knew I had to play my best to win.

"I just played point by point, I didn't want to get over anxious, stuck to my plan and I was super happy I finished before it got dark. I didn't want to finish it tomorrow."

As a former Slam champion, what does this win mean to you?

"This means a lot, I had to go through qualies. I battled out there, and I took this match as any other match. I know Coco has had a great season, and I am super proud of myself."

  6. Play suspendedpublished at 20:46 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Halys 6-2 6-3 Evans

And that's all for the night.

To Dan Evans' pleasure - and Quentin Halys' displeasure, most likely - bad light has stopped play for the evening on Court Two.

This match will resume on Tuesday - when Evans will have a mountain to climb to avoid a shock first-round exit.

  7. Game and second set - Halyspublished at 20:45 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Halys 6-2 6-3 Evans

Unbelievable tennis from Quentin Halys who does not blink in the face of adversity, saving another break point and booming down more big serves to take the second set.

  8. Game and second set - Sinnerpublished at 20:44 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Sinner 6-2 6-2 0-0 Cerundolo

A comfortable evening so far on Centre Court for men's eighth seed Jannik Sinner, who is now two sets to the good against Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

  9. Another Evans break pointpublished at 20:43 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Halys 6-2 5-3 Evans

Halys double faults to concede break point - but then fires down an ace to save it.

Evans fizzes home a forehand to bring up another break point - his fourth this game, I think.

  10. To-and-fro game goes onpublished at 20:42 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Halys 6-2 5-3 Evans

Second-serve ace from Halys! Ridiculous! Dan Evans must be thinking, how can I play against this?

Halys has been inspired and an errant Evans forehand brings up a second set point.

But back to deuce as the serve-volley tactic does not work for the Frenchman. What a game this is.

    *Halys 6-2 5-3 Evans

Goodness me, Dan Evans, inches away with a backhand down the line on break point.

Quentin Halys thinks he has a second set point with an ace but Evans challenges and replays show it's out!

Then Halys double faults! Break point again...

Qualifier Sofia Kenin has beaten seventh seed Coco Gauff in an absolute thriller on Court One.

Sensational tennis and the 2020 Australian Open winner has enough to get over the line.

Gauff's loss is our biggest shock of day one.

  13. Set point Halys - saved by Evanspublished at 20:37 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Halys 6-2 5-3 Evans

Tidy volley at the net and an unreturnable serve bring Halys from 15-30 down to set point.

But Halys makes the wrong decision to come to the net too early and Evans pounds a forehand at his feet that the Frenchman cannot adjust to return.

  14. Match pointpublished at 20:37 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Kenin 6-4 4-6 5-2 Gauff

Wide from Coco Gauff. 40-30. Match point for Sofia Kenin.

  15. Kenin serving for the matchpublished at 20:36 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Kenin 6-4 4-6 5-2 Gauff

Coco Gauff's latest backhand drops long. 30-15, Sofia Kenin is nearly there.

  16. Postpublished at 20:35 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Halys 6-2 5-3 Evans

Beautiful backhand winner down the line from Evans brings up 15-30, his first real sniff on the Halys serve for some time. At a crucial juncture too.

  17. Kenin serving for the matchpublished at 20:33 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Kenin 6-4 4-6 5-2 Gauff

At the third time of asking Sofia Kenin breaks fellow American Coco Gauff.

The qualifier will now serve for the match. This would be our biggest shock of the day if Kenin can get over the line against the seventh seed.

  18. Halys serving for setpublished at 20:33 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Halys 6-2 5-3 Evans

Comfortable hold for Dan Evans but he will have to break Quentin Halys' serve to avoid falling two sets behind.

Decent start on that score as Halys double faults the first point.

  20. Seeing the light?published at 20:27 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

Dan Evans was asking the umpire about the fading light in between games.

With good reason - if this match is completed tonight, it's hard to see it going any other way than the Frenchman's.

The Briton is pushing the boat out too much with a lot of his shots - he's up to 11 unforced errors. Halys has made only four.
