    *Halys 6-2 4-2 Evans

OK, some positivity for Dan Evans to feed off.

Puts away a volley at the net as the crowd get behind him and then a fabulous forehand right into the corner of the court. A hold of serve that was desperately needed.

Kenin v Gauff. This is tennis of the highest quality. Shots, pace, strength and determination.

  3. 'Evans throwing out bad vibes'published at 20:23 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Halys 6-2 4-1 Evans*

    John Lloyd
Former GB Davis Cup captain on BBC TV

I didn't think this match would go as quick as this, and if it did I thought it would go Dan Evans' way.

He is getting crushed. Evans has been battling himself almost from the first game. He has to remember the good times he's had, the class player he is and feed off that, rather than the negativity. Every single bad thing that has happened on the court, he is throwing out these bad vibes.

He needs to slow down and not rush so much.

  4. 'A must-win game for Gauff'published at 20:22 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Kenin 6-4 4-6 3-1 Gauff*

    Martina Navratilova
Nine-time Wimbledon singles champion on BBC TV

Kenin won that game despite herself. She was getting really frustrated.

She is definitely in the driver’s seat now.

It’s a must-win game for Gauff now. She can’t go two breaks down.

  5. 'Phenomenal' from Halyspublished at 20:22 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Halys 6-2 4-1 Evans

    John Lloyd
Former GB Davis Cup captain on BBC TV

This is world class from Halys. I know Dan Evans is not having a good time and not playing as well as he can, but this is a phenomenal performance.

  6. Kenin holdspublished at 20:22 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Kenin 6-4 4-6 3-1 Gauff*

Sofia Kenin gets over the line, saving three break points before squeezing to a hold.

That game had everything. Kenin even got a warning from the umpire for smashing her racquet against the ground.

  7. Halys holds to lovepublished at 20:22 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Halys 6-2 4-1 Evans*

Quentin Halys has only played one match on grass - at Hurlingham last week.

But right now he is looking like prime Pete Sampras and has almost as many aces per game as a pack of cards.

Dan Evans can't get near his serves.

  8. Evans a break down againpublished at 20:19 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Halys 6-2 3-1 Evans

Bit of fortune gives Quentin Halys two break points but an ill-judged drop shot from the Frenchman wastes the first.

However, Dan Evans dumps a forehand into the net on the second and he's got a mountain to climb now, the way these two are playing respectively.

  9. Postpublished at 20:17 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Kenin 6-4 4-6 2-1 Gauff

Sensational from Coco Gauff who explodes towards a drop shot and smashes in a crosscourt winner.

Break point, can she get back level in the decider?

Not this time as Sofia Kenin then steps up a gear, dominating from the net and smashing a volleyed winner. Deuce.

  10. Postpublished at 20:17 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Halys 6-2 2-1 Evans*

Huge splash of chalk off the sideline as Dan Evans hits a tidy ace - but either side of that he sends a forehand just wide and a volley into the net to go 15-30 down on serve.

Kind of sums up his match so far - bits of quality but not enough consistency and too many unforced errors.

  11. Evans takes umbrage with umpirepublished at 20:14 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Halys 6-2 2-1 Evans*

More reason for Dan Evans to see red as a fault on Quentin Halys' serve is overturned by a challenge - but the Frenchman is given the point, rather than it being replayed.

"The ball got called out before I hit the ball - I was never going to hit the ball back," Evans insists to the umpire at the changeover after Halys holds.

The standard between Kenin and Gauff is incredibly high. Really like Gauff but would love to see Kenin cause a wimby womble upset.

    Kenin 6-4 4-6 2-1 Gauff

    Martina Navratilova

Kenin looks like she is walking uphill or against the win, a very purposeful walk. She means it.

She has the break now in the third set, she's in the driver's seat.

  14. Evans holdspublished at 20:11 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Halys 6-2 1-1 Evans

Important hold for Dan Evans, if only to quell his rising discontent at pretty much everything that's happening on Court Two.

  16. Behold the 'Carota Boys'published at 20:07 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Sinner 4-1 Cerundolo

We are so accustomed to seeing people dressed as strawberries at Wimbledon, it is somewhat strange to see a bunch of carrots walking around!

The 'Carota Boys' have adopted Italy's Jannik Sinner, first following him in Rome, then to Roland Garros, and now here they are on the hallowed turf of SW19.

Sinner's take: "I have orange hair, and I used to eat carrots on court in Vienna. It's a good nickname."

It is obviously bringing him luck because he is up in the first set with a double break on Centre Court.

    Halys 6-2 1-0 Evans*

Dan Evans crashes an emphatic return around the post more in anger than anything but he was already 30-0 down at that stage.

He tries to continue that aggression on the following points but that only elicits errors as Quentin Halys secures his latest comfortable hold of serve to start set two.

  18. Kenin breaks in deciderpublished at 20:04 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Kenin 6-4 4-6 1-0 Gauff

Our match on Court One continues to swing this way and that.

Straight after winning the second set, seventh seed Coco Gauff finds herself a break down in the third.

Sofia Kenin has been another level today. Here's a crisp winner from earlier.

  20. Game and first set - Halyspublished at 20:03 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Halys 6-2 Evans

Dan Evans saves one set point with an ace but the serve-volley attempt on the second goes awry.

The British number two is in danger of a first-round exit for a second successive year after his 2022 opening-match loss to qualifier Jason Kubler.
