  1. Gauff struggling against Keninpublished at 19:41 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Kenin 6-4 3-3 Gauff*

Coco Gauff has lost her rhythm again on Court One. The teenager had a chance to go 4-1 up in the second set but Sofia Kenin has broken back.

Kenin has the momentum, she's just held to love and we're level again in the second set.

  2. Evans levelspublished at 19:39 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Halys 1-1 Evans

The Frenchman is not taking a backward step in these early exchanges, crunching some huge forehands and really making Dan Evans work hard.

But the Briton responds well to hold to 15, helped by a couple of solid serves that Halys could only return into the net.

And Evans starts the next game with a wonderful passing forehand over the low side of the net.

    Mmoh 7-6 6-7 7-6 6-4 Auger-Aliassime

Arguably the shock of the day so far?

Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime, the 11th seed and former Wimbledon quarter-finalist, is out - beaten in four sets by American Michael Mmoh.

  4. Halys holdspublished at 19:35 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Halys 1-0 Evans*

Fair to say Dan Evans' Wimbledon record isn't as good as he would have hoped for a home Slam.

He's only progressed past the first round on three occasions - not once reaching the second week.

And he fails to make much of an impression on Quentin Halys' opening service game.

    Kenin 6-4 1-3 Gauff*

Having lost the first set on Court One, Coco Gauff got off to a flying start in the second against Sofia Kenin with an early break and she's now serving for a 4-1 lead.

Dan Evans enters Wimbledon at the midway point of a difficult season - and admitted he was not looking forward to the event after a first-round Queen’s exit, which came during a run of form he described as "embarrassing".

But the British number two's outlook has improved the more the tournament has neared and the 27th seed opens up against France's Quentin Halys last up on Court Two.

"When you come in after a loss it’s difficult, I’m obviously looking forward to it - it’s Wimbledon," he said. "It’s an amazing experience to play here and win matches here so that’s my goal.

"I’m a realist. I didn’t play very well [at Queen’s] and it’s important to know that. There’s no point kidding yourself."

There's definitely a nip in the air now and Dan Evans jogs on the spot as he waits for his opponent at the net to do the coin toss.

Evans is one of two seeded British men's players at this year's tournament - along with Cameron Norrie. The Briton won the toss and will receive from the world number 79 first.

Before the focus turns on Great Britain's Dan Evans, let us remind you of the main headlines from the first day of Wimbledon 2023:

    • Defending men's champion Novak Djokovic began his quest for an eighth title with a straight-set win over Pedro Cachin.
    • Women's world number one Iga Swiatek eased through her first-round match against China's Zhu Lin.
    • Not helped by a nasty slip in the first set, 43-year-old Venus Williams lost to Elina Svitolina in straight sets.
    • Liam Broady and Jodie Burrage are the two Brits through to the second round after wins today, but Harriet Dart and Katie Swan were knocked out.

    Halys v Evans

Over on Court Two, the players have just emerged for the final match of the evening with British involvement.

Can British men's number two Dan Evans follow Liam Broady into the second round? The 27th seed faces France's Quentin Halys shortly.

  11. 'A pleasure to play Venus'published at 19:28 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Williams 4-6 3-6 Svitolina

Elina Svitolina after her first-round win: "It's always a pleasure to play Venus. I have played her so many times in almost every slam.

"It was a very special moment to play in front of you guys. It's a special court and to play this legend is really unbelievable.

"Grass takes a lot out of your legs. You have to get through and Venus plays really quick so I had to work hard for today's win.

"We had a special moment in October welcoming our beautiful daughter. I'm so happy I could come back to tennis so quick.

"To come here, play in a Grand Slam, it's an unbelievable feeling.

"It's definitely one of the moments you dream of, playing here."

  12. 'Did not become the crackerjack it could have been'published at 19:25 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Williams 4-6 3-6 Svitolina

    Iain Carter
BBC tennis reporter on BBC Radio 5 Live

It didn't quite become the crackerjack that we thought it cold have been and it was such a shame that Venus had that fall at the end of the third game. Whether it damaged to that knee, it certainly did undermined her in terms of the movement for that match.

  13. Williams given brilliant receptionpublished at 19:23 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Williams 4-6 3-6 Svitolina

Venus Williams shook her head at the umpire as she left Centre Court. I don't think she was too happy the match was decided on a video referral.

She was given a standing ovation as she walked off.

  14. Game and third set - Choinskipublished at 19:21 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Choinski 5-7 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 Lajovic

Jan Choinski is one of the more unheralded Brits at this year's tournament but the debutant is two sets to one up on Court 17 against Dusan Lajovic.

Lajovic is no mug - he's one of only four men to beat Novak Djokovic this year so this would be some scalp for the 164th-ranked Germany-born Brit.

  17. Bencic rode storm wellpublished at 19:17 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Swan 5-7 2-6 Bencic

    Jess Anderson

It’s gone a bit chilly in the corner of Court Two that I’m sat in with the opposite side bathed in sunshine.

Katie Swan had played herself back into this match somewhat but Belinda Bencic is a top-20 player and rode the storm well.

The Swiss 14th seed reached the semi-finals of the US Open in 2019 and takes this one fairly comfortably.

    Breaking

    Swan 5-7 2-6 Bencic

That's it - Katie Swan follows compatriot Harriet Dart out of Wimbledon as 14th seed Belinda Bencic converts the first of those three match points with an unstoppable forehand into the corner of the court.

It's all not gloom and doom for the Brits though - Jodie Burrage and Liam Broady are through, remember.

British men's number two Dan Evans is up next on Court Two.

  19. 'I wanted to be like Venus'published at 19:15 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Williams 4-6 3-5 Svitolina

    Marion Bartoli
Former Wimbledon champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

For me Venus was the one that when I grew up, I wanted to be like her. She was being that aggressive player, dictating, just imposing her game.

The first time I played her in the final, I had little to say in this match. She took that away from me, playing extremely aggressive.

She was the most incredible competitor, and you can never count her out of a match.
