  1. Three set points for Halyspublished at 20:01 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Halys 5-2 Evans*

What a sliced backhand on to the chalk from Quentin Halys.

He's zoned in while Dan Evans is allowing himself to be frustrated, distracted and annoyed.

A double fault yields 0-30 - and a backhand winner down the line brings up three set points for Halys.

Joe: Whoever wins the match between Coco Gauff and Sofia Kenin can go very deep in the tournament - the standard has been so good today.

  3. Warning for Evanspublished at 19:59 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Halys 5-2 Evans*

Goodness me, the power in Halys' serve is something to behold.

From 0-30 down he pounds in four massive serves - in between a frustrated Evans is given a formal warning by the umpire for an audible obscenity.

Indeed, Evans has found renewed vigour after that hold - a booming forehand followed by a huge shout of 'COME ON' as he brings up 0-30 on the Frenchman's serve.

Dan Evans does not cut a very happy figure at the moment, shaking his head and muttering to himself and the umpire.

The Brit has been vocal about his struggles this year and it looks at times like he's struggling to kerb those negative thoughts in his opening match.

Having said that, a solid hold for 4-2 will be a good confidence booster, as will the crowd shouting "come on Danny boy!"

  6. Game and second set Gauffpublished at 19:55 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Kenin 6-4 4-6 0-0 Gauff*

Long again from Sofia Kenin, she's broken for just the second time today. Coco Gauff forces a decider on Court One.

  7. Set point Gauffpublished at 19:54 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Kenin 6-4 4-5 Gauff

How are your nerves? Sofia Kenin goes long with a simple forehand. Advantage and set point for Coco Gauff.

  8. Evans saves break point to holdpublished at 19:54 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Halys 4-2 Evans*

Is that a possible turning point for Dan Evans in this opening set?

Had he gone 5-1 down the set was over but he smashes down two aces and a third unreturnable serve to turn break point into a hold.

  9. 'Manage your own service game'published at 19:53 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Halys 4-1 Evans*

    John Lloyd
Former GB Davis Cup captain on BBC TV

Evans is checking out his group, giving them the old verbals. Not the team's fault you had a bad service game. At the moment the Frenchman is on fire.

The first job you have to do is manage your own service game and hope your experience takes you through.

    Halys 4-1 Evans*

Dan Evans has lost his past five matches on the ATP Tour - and right now, you can tell.

A flicked forehand into the corner of the court rescues Evans an important point from 15-30 down but he just cannot find his first serve and that is bringing pressure.

  11. Kenin serving to stay in second setpublished at 19:50 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Kenin 6-4 4-5 Gauff

It's heated. Coco Gauff punched the air as she holds with an ace.

Sofia Kenin will serve to stay in the second set.

Dan Evans in deep conversation, from a distance of course, with his coaching team at the changeover after he missed a couple of opportunities in that Halys service game to threaten a break back.

This opening set is slipping away from the Brummie.

  13. Game and third set - Hanfmannpublished at 19:49 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Hanfmann 4-6 6-2 6-4 0-0 Fritz

Potentially another shock brewing on Court Three?

Taylor Fritz, the men's ninth seed, has just lost the third set to Germany's Yannick Hanfmann and is now two sets to one behind.

  15. 'Very impressive by the Frenchman'published at 19:48 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Halys 3-1 Evans

    John Lloyd
Former GB Davis Cup captain on BBC TV

I think Evans needs to make sure his first serve percentage is quite high, because his second serve is getting punished.

Halys is playing aggressive tennis here. He's anxious to get in when he can - he's come out here, taking the ball and going for it. Very impressive performance by the Frenchman.

  16. It's tense on Court Onepublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Kenin 6-4 4-4 Gauff*

Back on Court One and we're racing towards the end of the second set. Both Americans Coco Gauff and Sofia Kenin have just held pretty comfortable service games.

    Who will blink first?

  17. Evans brokenpublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    *Halys 3-1 Evans

But while Choinski celebrates, it's not going so well for Dan Evans.

A double fault does not aid his cause on the way to a loss of serve.

  19. 'I love Evans' variety'published at 19:44 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Halys 2-1 Evans*

    John Lloyd
Former GB Davis Cup captain on BBC TV

I love Evans' variety. He's not a tall man by today's standards, doesn't have a big serve but he uses all different parts of the game.

I think he is in the top five in the world as a volleyer. He can change the game around and a lot of players don't like playing him when he's playing well, because he can throw so many things at you.

  20. Postpublished at 19:41 British Summer Time 3 July 2023

    Halys 2-1 Evans*

Not looking like there's going to be many long rallies in this match - and as if to rubber-stamp that notion, Quentin Halys bangs down two huge aces to hold serve.

Both players going big here - is the time of night they are starting having anything to do with that? Neither will want to have to come back tomorrow to finish matters, one imagines.
