    Tomova 0-2 Boulter*

A good rally ends with Viktoriya Tomova just lifting the ball over the net to take the first point of the second game.

It is a determined start by Tomova but Boulter has no intention of giving up the early advantage and fights back well to hold.

    *Broady 6-4 3-6 Ruud

    Andrew Castle
BBC Sport tennis commentator on BBC One

It was a right old scrap there, they were in the trenches. I think Ruud kept his temper admirably. Casper Ruud must be frustrated on the court.

    Broady 6-4 3-6 Ruud

Finally, at the sixth opportunity, Casper Ruud converts a set point, helped by a Broady backhand into the net and he levels the match at one set all.

Oh Liam Broady, that is naughty, wonderfully disguised drop shot saves a fifth set point.

  5. Boulter breaks earlypublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 6 July 2023

    Tomova 0-1 Boulter*

But Katie Boulter gets the job done at the fourth attempt, smashing a return cross court and she has the early initiative.

Great start by the British number one.

    Broady 6-4 3-5 Ruud*

But when the Ruud forehand does hit correctly, it's tough to get back as Liam Broady has occasionally found out.

It sets up another set point for the Norwegian - but then an errant forehand cancels it out. Deuce again.

Liam Broady loves this. With a roar of support ringing in his ears, the Brit asks for even more cheers as he earns a break point.

Louder. Louder! As the Black Eyes Peas would say.

Pump it up, he tells Centre.

    Tomova* 0-0 Boulter

A tense start with both players showing some early nerves.

Katie Boulter twice has break point but fails to take advantage as a forehand return into the net brings it back to deuce on the second one.

A fine winner at advantage Tomova draws big applause from the home fans, before a double fault by the Bulgarian again gives Boulter break point, but again she fails to take advantage.

    Broady 6-4 3-5 Ruud*

Real slice of fortune for Casper Ruud as he tries to reach a lob but can't - and it drops inches out.

    Zverev 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 4-3 Brouwer*

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

If Alexander Zverev gets through this match, he won't be too daunted by what faces him in round two.

The potential opponents are world number 81 Marc-Andrea Huesler of Switzerland, or Japan's Yosuke Watanuki, who is ranked 116th in the world and lost in qualifying but then got a lucky reprieve because of late withdrawals.

Zverev needs two more games and one break of serve and it's round two for him.

Right now Broady doing the right things. It will be interesting to see how Ruud handles the nerves. This is where Ruud will take a little bit more time, and focus on being more aggressive.

    Broady 6-4 3-5 Ruud*

Bit of a fortunate instinctive backhand at the net finds the line for Liam Broady.

Casper Ruud's backhand return then goes long, a forehand return goes wide and it's quickly 40-0 to the Brit.

One strong forehand later from Broady - and he responds to Ruud's hold to love with one of his own, forcing the world number four to serve out the set.

Matteo Berrettini, who was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the 2021 Wimbledon final, has finally come out on top of his first-round all-Italian encounter with Lorenzo Sonego on court 12.

He will play Australia's Alex De Minaur, the boyfriend of British number one Katie Boulter, in the second round.

And speaking of Britain's Boulter, she's up next on court 12 against Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova. You can watch that here.

    *Broady 6-4 2-5 Ruud

But what Liam Broady needed after that hold was to trouble the Casper Ruud serve - and he's not able to do anything of the kind as the world number seals a hold to love with an ace out wide.
