Norrie is going to try and get Eubanks moving. When the ball is in his strike zone he is a very dangerous player. Using his flat backhand, taking that cross-court a lot.

Eubanks changed this up with a little kick-serve, getting the ball moving away from him,

  2. Alcaraz holds to lovepublished at 15:44 British Summer Time 7 July 2023

    Alcaraz 6-4 7-6 (7-2) 2-1 Muller*

A straightforward hold for Carlos Alcaraz kicks off the third set.

It's not so plain sailing for his French opponent, but Alexandre Muller manages to save three break points to hold. That's 11 break points saved by the world number 84.

Another service game races by for the top seed.

Alcaraz looks like he wants to get this match over as quickly as possible, but that won't upset the Centre Court spectators who will be eagerly anticipating a certain Andy Murray taking to the stage.

This is all very straightforward, isn't it?

Another game comes and goes without the receiver taking a point. A seventh ace (!) of the match puts Chris Eubanks 40-0 up before he delicately clips the ball over the net to take the next point and the game.

Two-time Wimbledon semi-finalist Victoria Azarenka has just wrapped up the first set against 11th seed Daria Kasatkina.

The 33-year-old Belarusian reached the Australian Open semi-finals in January and no doubt fancies another run at SW19.

Four games. Eleven minutes. Zero receiving points won.

At this rate those ticket-holders on Court One who popped for Pimms might miss the entire first set.

    Norrie 2-2 Eubanks*

Another game that is all about the serve. There's the smallest of rallies at 30-0 but it swiftly ends when Chris Eubanks' puts a backhand return into the net before another ace by Cameron Norrie seals the fourth game.

Eubanks wins a hold to love with four aces, straight after Norrie thumped down a couple.

Like the halcyon days of grass-court tennis.

  8. 'No sniff of a rally'published at 15:39 British Summer Time 7 July 2023

First twelve points of this match have been one by the server. Not so much of a sniff of a rally.

Cracking ovation for Cameron Norrie as he walks out onto Court One.

Quite a few empty seats as folk stretch their legs following Aryna Sabalenka’s win.

    They’ll be back sharpish.

The people who are already here have been muted by Eubanks coming out punching.

A big-hitting opening salvo from the rangy American.

    Norrie v Eubanks

    Jonathan Jurejko
    BBC Sport at Wimbledon

College tennis has been a successful pathway to the pro ranks in recent years, with 23 players in the Wimbledon singles having ties to the US education system.

    Here are two of them.

Norrie studied sociology at Texas Christian University, while Eubanks did a business major at Georgia Tech.

As well as being able to live life like a normal early 20-something - i.e. enjoy the nightlife - the experience also toughens players up in tennis terms.

The hustle of the US college system is a learning curve which Norrie credits for his never-say-die attitude.
