  4. Raducanu's much anticipated returnpublished at 12:49 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

Britain's Emma Raducanu is back on court after a long period on the sidelines and will be the focus of lots of attention.

The 21-year-old Briton spent eight months out following wrist and ankle surgeries last year, returning with a victory over Romania's Gabi Ruse at the recent Auckland Open before losing to Wimbledon semi-finalist Elina Svitolina.

Expectations about Raducanu's progress must be tempered and patience is required. Pulling out of two exhibition matches in Melbourne this week was illustrative of the precautionary measures she is taking.

A host of physical problems hampered her progress following the shock 2021 US Open victory which catapulted her from relative obscurity to sporting superstardom.

Avoiding major injuries - although minor niggles after a long absence may be unavoidable - will be the key to a productive season.

With an injury-protected ranking of 103, Raducanu will start in the Australian Open main draw after benefitting from the withdrawal of several players above her.

"I think success to me in the long-term is to play a full season, to be healthy throughout and be able to train consistent weeks," she said.

"I know my level is there, I just need to keep working on it to make it more consistent."

Jack Draper, stinging from the disappointment of losing out on the Adelaide International title two days ago, is back in action against American Marcos Giron.

On the women's side, Emma Raducanu returns to Grand Slam tennis after eight months out injured with a first-round match against American Selby Rogers.

And British number one Katie Boulter takes on Chinese world number 61 Yuan Yue.

    Day two = done.

Let's remind ourselves what has happened on another busy day at Melbourne Park.

    • Andy Murray says there is a "definite possibility" he has played his final Australian Open after a subdued display in a first-round 6-4 6-2 6-2 loss to Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
    • Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev survived a scare as he fought back from a set down before opponent Terence Atmane quit in tears because of cramp.
    • Greek seventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas also came from behind to beat Belgian lucky loser Zizou Bergs 5-7 6-1 6-1 6-3.
    • In the women's draw, US Open winner Coco Gauff said a pep talk helped her overcome early nerves as she cruised through her first Grand Slam match as a major champion in a 6-3 6-0 win over Slovakia's Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
    • Tunisian sixth seed Ons Jabeur took just 67 minutes to beat Ukrainian qualifier Yulia Starodubtsewa 6-3 6-1.
    • But Wimbledon champion and seventh seed Marketa Vondrousova suffered a shock exit, suffering a 6-1 6-2 defeat by Ukrainian qualifier Dayana Yastremska.
    • And as we've just seen, Caroline Garcia spoiled the comeback party for the returning Naomi Osaka with a magnificent serving performance in a 6-4 7-6 (7-2) win

  7. 'Very impressed by Osaka'published at 12:35 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Courtney Nguyen
WTA reporter on Radio 5 Sports Extra and BBC Sounds

Naomi Osaka came down all the way to Australia. She played three matches and they were good matches.

I was not sure what level of tennis we would see from Osaka. I was very impressed in all three matches she played. The first match against Tamara Korpatsch in Brisbane, I was stunned and forgot how fast her racket can move and how big she can hit the ball.

She should leave Australia disappointed that her level didn't get her better results at the two tournaments she played but encouraged that this is what it took to beat her.

    Osaka 4-6 6-7 (2-7) Garcia

Caroline Garcia on playing four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka on her return to the sport:

"I have a lot of respect for Naomi Osaka as a person and as a player. We all know she's had an amazing career. She's been away for 15 months and been through a lot. I'm just very glad to see her back. I hope she can enjoy the tennis and have fun out there. She's a great girl and has done so much for tennis in the past years. Just six months after giving birth and she's playing amazing tennis so we have to watch out!"

On her performance in the match:

"I was so anxious, I was just trying to breathe! I had to be very solid and try to bring some balls back and be as aggressive as I could every time I had the chances. Obviously I had a lot of pressure on my serve. She was really trying to put pressure on my second serve but I managed to stay solid and to be a little bit more aggressive at the end."

Caroline Garcia praises her opponent Naomi Osaka for that stellar performance.

It really is incredible to think that Osaka is back playing at that level just six months after giving birth.

This match did not feel like a first-round match at all so who knows how far Osaka may have got had she had a slightly more favourable draw.

  10. 'Garcia embraced the moment'published at 12:18 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

Caroline Garcia was ready for it. She embraced the moment, embraced the opportunity and just played like a pure underdog with full confidence of what her abilities were.

She played without blinking in that match.

A huge moment and a superb performance from the Frenchwoman to book her place in the second round.

Naomi Osaka looks bitterly disappointed as she gathers her things but that was a really high quality match and the Rod Laver crowd have enjoyed having her back.

If that's what she can produce on her first Grand Slam match back after giving birth what else can we expect from her this year?

Blimey... I've just said we haven't seen many double faults from Caroline Garcia but she hits a second one in the space of one game.

Is this a chance for Naomi Osaka?

Forget that. She hammers down an ace to wrap up the game and take us to a tie-break.

  19. Postpublished at 12:08 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Osaka 4-6 6-5 Garcia*

Woah, Caroline Garcia double faults at 30-0, we haven't seen many of those.

I keep saying how good Garcia has been on serve but both are now level on 10 aces and three double faults.

Garcia brings up game point with a crunching forehand.

Naomi Osaka needs Caroline Garcia to slip a little bit on serve. This serving is just too good for Osaka to make any inroads.
