  1. Jabeur one game from second roundpublished at 09:16 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Jabeur 6-3 5-1 Starodubtseva*

Oops, just as I say that Jabeur goes from 30-0 up to handing Starodubtseva a break point.

She bangs down a brilliant first serve to get out of trouble then hits back-to-back forehand winners to take the hold.

The Ukrainian will have to serve to stay in the match.

    *Jabeur 6-3 4-1 Starodubtseva

We've played just over an hour and Jabeur is using all her experience here to get through this one.

Starodubtseva has put up a good fight on her Grand Slam debut but it looks like this is only going one way now.

There's a bit of a befuddled look on Jabeur's face as she waits. This hasn't been quite as easy as she would've liked.

That being said she earns herself a break point after some nifty work at the baseline and seals it with a forehand winner.

Starodubtseva keeps the pressure on for deuce but pushes one into the net and Jabeur hammers down a smash volley to take a decisive lead in this second set.

    *Jabeur 6-3 2-1 Starodubtseva

Ahh, Jabeur makes a couple of mistakes and it could be the opening Starodubtseva needs but she fails to land the forehand and that leaves Jabeur on the brink of securing the hold.

"Stupid!" Starodubtseva appears to say to herself.

newGeez86: Andy Murray needs to retire to be fair …. He hasn’t been the same since his injury and he’s not getting younger! He’s a absolute legend in British tennis history and he shouldn’t keep playing if it’s going to ruin his legacy.

Rachel: Andy Murray has earned the right a million times over to fight to the end. And to define when that end is.

Doug: Why oh why do sportsmen like Andy have to hang on after their time is clearly up? Federer retired when he knew his injury would restrict his game. We would like to remember our champions for their achievements and not for their later failures.

  7. Starodubtseva holdspublished at 09:03 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    *Jabeur 6-3 2-1 Starodubtseva

Errors just starting to creep in from Starodubtseva.

She pushes one into the net for deuce but prevents the break point opportunity as Jabeur sends one long then does well to work the Tunisian across the baseline and Jabeur can only skew her return out.

That's an important hold for the young Ukrainian, things could have started to unravel very easily.

  8. Jabeur consolidates with holdpublished at 08:59 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Jabeur 6-3 2-0 Starodubtseva*

Ons Jabeur is fully settled and ticking nicely now.

She secures a straightforward hold to 15 with a lovely forehand winner.

Fan favourite Gael Monfils is into the second round of the Australian Open with a 6-4 6-3 7-5 win over world number 49 Yannick Hanfmann, who is ranked 26 places above Frenchman Monfils.

Monfils will take on Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who has just beaten Andy Murray, in the next round.

  10. Jabeur breakspublished at 08:56 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    *Jabeur 6-3 1-0 Starodubtseva

A much more confident start to the second set from Ons Jabeur.

She won't want to mess around now and she takes the early break.

  11. Game and first set - Jabeurpublished at 08:55 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Jabeur 6-3 Starodubtseva

Well, that was not easy for Ons Jabeur but she got there in the end.

After trading breaks Jabeur eventually made the crucial breakthrough to take a 5-3 lead over Yulia Starodubtseva, despite a valiant effort from the Ukrainian, who saved no less than FIVE break points.

Tunisian sixth seed Jabeur probably won't be too pleased with that opener so will we see a different level in this second set?

I think it should be time now for Andy to put the racket in it's sleeve and call it a day

I think it's time now for Andy. He's done us all incredibly proud over the years but now I think it's time.

Andy Murray didn't serve well enough, made too many errors. He didn't put enough balls in court as a returner and didn't dominate baseline rallies well enough.

My bigger concern is that I didn't feel his presence on the court today.

  15. Postpublished at 08:53 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

We'll have to wait and see what Andy Murray has to say in his press conference about why that match went the way it did today.

Only his second opening-round defeat at the Australian Open in 16 years, the loss to Tomas Martin Etcheverry leaves the five-time runner-up in unfamiliar territory.

His only other defeat in the first round in Melbourne since 2008 came five years ago in an emotional five-setter against Roberto Bautista Agut, after Murray revealed the extent of his hip issues.

Where does he go from here? Reading between the lines, he won't be motivated to continue putting in the hard work required just to experience early exits from major tournaments.

There is dejection, perhaps resignation. A reality check for Andy Murray who was not at his best, He was not landing the serves he wanted. He was making far too many errors, especially on the forehand side.

It's quite dispiriting when you commit so much time in pre-season and then you return from Australia having played two matches and not get a win.

To those of us watching on, yes I still get a kick out of watching him play but, you feel less and less every time that he has the weapons to beat the best players in the world.

Over on Margaret Court, two-time Wimbledon finalist has got her Australian Open campaign well and truly under way over and it's been the an up-and-down start from the Tunisian sixth seed.

Ukrainian Yuliia Starodubtseva, ranked 152 in the world, broke Jabeur in the opening game but Jabeur quickly broke back then secured one of her own and looked like she would be well on her way to the first set.

But 23-year-old Starodubtseva broke back again to put us back on serve.

    It's hotting up.

Jabeur's best run here was in 2020 when she reached the quarter-final and she'll be hoping to get off to a strong start and put her name firmly in the conversation and go for that elusive maiden Grand Slam title.

The last time Andy Murray lost in the first round at the Australian Open was five years ago.

Then, in 2019, an emotional Murray told the media that he thought he would soon have to retire.

He has continued to battle on, with a metal hip, since then.

But having accepted this year could be his final one on the tour should it prove to be as challenging as the end to last season, that subdued loss is unlikely to aid his motivation for continuing.

It was certainly a far cry from his efforts here in 2023, when he came through successive five-set thrillers.

  20. 'Murray is one of my idols' - Etcheverrypublished at 08:32 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Murray 4-6 2-6 2-6 Etcheverry

Tomas Martin Etcheverry speaking after his first round win over Andy Murray:

"It was an incredible match for me. It's very tough to play with a legend like Murray. He's one of my idols. We play two times last year and there were long battles like this. Today I played incredible and I hope I can continue this level in the next match.

    On hopes for this season:

"I want to keep going. I work so hard, need to improve a lot of things in my game and am trying to be in the top 20 this year."
