Five years ago, the Australian Open played a video montage in tribute to Murray as they thought it would be his last appearance at Melbourne Park.

It turned out to be very premature.

But if there are many more performances like that this season then Murray, by his own admission, probably won't be back here next year.

Sir Muzz raises both hands to the crowd as he waves goodbye. Head bowed. Looks like he's a bit emotional but hard to say for sure.

Andy Murray pauses as he waves goodbye to the Australian Open before heading off the court.

Is that to be his final appearance at Melbourne Park?

The three-time major winner will be left with plenty to think about after being clear second-best today.

Andy Murray saves the first match point, but Tomas Martin Etcheverry has simply been too good for him today and seals a deserved victory in two hours and 23 minutes.

Here we go then. Tomas Martin Etcheverry will serve for the match and a place in the Australian Open second round.

It's been a fine performance from the 24-year-old.

There will be limited Murray magic at this year's Australian Open.

Tomas Martin Etcheverry ends a brilliantly worked point with a forehand to clinch the break and leave himself on the verge of victory.

Ha! Andy Murray catches Tomas Martin Etcheverry out again with another sublime drop shot. That's put a smile on the faces of those backing the Briton.

But Murray nets on the following point and Etcheverry has break point - and effectively match point, you suspect.

Andy Murray is starting to hold his hip and his thigh. I would guess there's a little bit of a niggle in there but it's also probably psychosomatic as he's starting to potentially accept that the level isn't quite there.

This is not just worrying for today, but for Murray to have this feeling on a tennis court where almost anything he tries isn't working, has to be a concern for his mental state and what he's thinking for the rest of his year and the rest of his career.

But defeat is looming now for Andy Murray.

That was a chance, but Etcheverry crashes down an ace on his way to another hold. He's two games away.

Andy Murray is left chasing a lost cause as Tomas Martin Etcheverry bends a backhand winner out of reach.

He stays in contention, though, and finds a surge of inspiration to win successive points for deuce.

It looks as though it's going to be an early exit for five-time Australian Open finalist Andy Murray.

Even by his standards, this would require something very, very special.

Tomas Martin Etcheverry breaks for a 3-2 lead and the Argentine can see the second round now.

Huge points coming up here for Andy Murray.

Sitting down at the changeover, Murray closes his eyes and breathes in deeply several times.

Is it a form of meditation? A calming mechanism?

Or is he feeling a bit under the weather and trying to clear his sinuses?

Don't know but he's hoping it works, whatever it is.

Andy Murray's level undoubtedly needs to come up, but you sense Tomas Martin Etcheverry's level also needs to dip slightly for the Briton to gain a foothold in the contest.

The world number 32 holds to love to level the third set at 2-2 and put the pressure back on Murray.

You may remember American Christopher Eubanks from Wimbledon last year, where the 27-year-old had an excellent run to the quarter-finals.

Ranked 34 in the world and playing serve-and-volley tennis with a stinging forehand, Eubanks has matched his career best performance in Melbourne by beating Japanese player Taro Daniel in straight sets to reach the second round.

The crowd are very much involved in this now, sensing Andy Murray needs more from them to help him start firing in this match.

That's a promising game. Murray dominates a couple of rallies and closes in to settle a straightforward hold. He won't go down without a real fight, that much is for sure.

Tomas Martin Etcheverry misses to give Andy Murray hope at 30-30, but the Briton can't push on from there.

He's not broken the Argentine since the second game of the match. Etcheverry has been solid.
