    Laura Robson
Former British number one on Eurosport

It just wasn't the Andy Murray we were expecting to see. I watched him play in Brisbane. He was the only person who took a set off the eventual champion Grigor Dimitrov. He played great and played aggressive tennis. He looked physically so fit.

He lost in the first round there and maybe had too long to practice before today because it seemed like the problem was that he was too flat today, both physically and emotionally. He couldn't use the crowd the way he usually does

It was tough to see him after the match. He was in the press conference room looking down and out. I just feel for him so much. You just want to give him a hug because he's got so much more to give than what we saw today.

    *Osaka 2-2 Garcia

Aggressive positioning from Caroline Garcia helps her dominate another service game, a double fault at 40-0 her only blip before she levels the first set at 2-2 with an ace.

This promised to be the tie of the round and both players have started at a high level.

Here's a reminder of the headlines from day two at the Australian Open:

    • Andy Murray says there is a "definite possibility" he has played his final Australian Open after a subdued display in a first-round 6-4 6-2 6-2 loss to Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
    • Russian third seed Daniil Medvedev survived a scare as he fought back from a set down before opponent Terence Atmane quit in tears because of cramp.
    • Greek seventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas also came from behind to beat Belgian lucky loser Zizou Bergs 5-7 6-1 6-1 6-3.
    • In the women's draw, US Open winner Coco Gauff said a pep talk helped her overcome early nerves as she cruised through her first Grand Slam match as a major champion in a 6-3 6-0 win over Slovakia's Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
    • Tunisian sixth seed Ons Jabeur took just 67 minutes to beat Ukrainian qualifier Yulia Starodubtsewa 6-3 6-1.
    • But Wimbledon champion and seventh seed Marketa Vondrousova suffered a shock exit, suffering a 6-1 6-2 defeat by Ukrainian qualifier Dayana Yastremska.

Both of these two have started very well, pound for pound in games. They both know they need to be firing tonight because of the quality of their opponent.

  5. Osaka holdspublished at 10:55 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Osaka 2-1 Garcia*

This has started at quite a pace, with both players going on the offensive and we're seeing lots of short points as a result.

Some heavy hitting from Naomi Osaka, who looks very much up to speed on her return to Melbourne Park. She too holds to love.

  6. Garcia holdspublished at 10:53 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    *Osaka 1-1 Garcia

Superb serving from Caroline Garcia early in this match and she too takes a comfortable first game, doing so to love with a couple of aces thrown in. Confident start by both.

  7. Osaka holds in opening gamepublished at 10:51 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Osaka 1-0 Garcia*

Naomi Osaka is serving first on her Grand Slam return, but it's Caroline Garcia who earns the first point as the four-time major winner sends a forehand long.

The 26-year-old resets impressively to wrap up the opening game with four successive points. Up and running!

  8. 'Early days for Osaka'published at 10:49 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Garcia v Osaka

    Russell Fuller
Tennis correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

When I spoke to Naomi Osaka she looked and sounded as though she was raring to go again. Having watched her in the Brisbane tournament she is definitely missing some lightness of touch in difficult moments.

But she sounds very motivated, it's tough being away from her daughter in Australia for this amount of time but she didn't feel it was right for Shai to travel with her.

If she goes all the way in Melbourne she won't be home until the last day of January so that's tough. But there's some perspective there and she says she wants her daughter to be proud of her, she's playing for something bigger than her.

But it's very, very early days.

  9. Will Garcia spoil Osaka's comeback?published at 10:47 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Osaka v Garcia

Caroline Garcia's best Grand Slam result arrived at the 2022 US Open, when she reached the semi-finals.

This is her 13th Australian Open main draw appearance, and her best runs in the previous 12 ended with fourth round exits in 2018 and 2023.

The French player lost out to Naomi Osaka in their only previous meeting, losing in the second round at the 2021 Australian Open which Osaka went on to win.

Currently ranked 20 in the world, Garcia was ranked fourth this time last year and will offer a stern test of Osaka's current level.

  10. How quickly can Osaka challenge again?published at 10:44 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Osaka v Garcia

When Naomi Osaka won her fourth major title at the 2021 Australian Open, it felt like she would lead the women's game for years to come as both an athlete and an advocate.

But later that year the Japanese superstar opened up about suffering depression, taking extended breaks from the tour as a result.

And she then had an even longer absence as she gave birth to her daughter Shai in 2023.

Displaying glimpses of her best on her return in Brisbane, the question is how quickly can she challenge for the biggest prizes again?

  14. 'Murray got down and couldn't get up'published at 09:31 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Murray 4-6 2-6 2-6 Etcheverry

    Ben Rothenberg
    Tennis journalist and writer

Andy Murray looked good in his first tournament this year in Brisbane against Grigor Dimitrov. He lost that but he looked sharp and he was combative and ready.

You have days where you're flat and you don't expect that from Murray at a Grand Slam. He got down and couldn't get up. That's a long flight home after that match for sure.

  15. 'Very special to come back here' - Jabeurpublished at 09:30 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Jabeur 6-3 6-1 Starodubtseva

Ons Jabeur on returning to the Australian Open with a straight-set win over Yuliia Starodubtseva in the first round:

"It's very, very special to come back here. I decided to rest a bit before coming to the Australian Open. The crowd really helped today and hopefully it'll be a much better match in the next round. Last year wasn't so great here so coming back here I was a little bit stressed but seeing the crowd made me less stressed.

    On being in Melbourne:

"I'm a very bad tourist! Maybe when I retire from tennis I will find plenty to go around Melbourne but for now, basically my life is hotel here and hotel there so nothing much. I've been enjoying the restaurant because I love food."

Danny: I've always supported Murray's determination and decision to continue his tennis career. Watching him today unable to offer anything in the way of resistance is very sad. You have had the most magnificent of careers Andy, but it's time to call it a day.

secretgreyfrair: It's sad but Murray should call it a day. If he was enjoying it then no problem, carry on. But with competitive instincts like his, I'm not he is when he's getting these results. This also must be having such a detrimental impact on his health in later life. Is it worth it?

Neil: You should bow out at Wimbledon Andy, say cheerio permanently at the scene of your greatest triumph. Time to retire mate

The world number 317 has made the quarter-finals in Melbourne four times in the past so he knows how to win here.

  18. game, set and match

Game, set and match - Jabeurpublished at 09:20 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Jabeur 6-3 6-1 Starodubtseva

Job done for Tunisian sixth seed Ons Jabeur!

A bit sticky at times but she will be happy to come through that one unscathed against 23-year-old qualifier Yulia Starodubtseva.

  19. Jabeur two match pointspublished at 09:19 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    Jabeur 6-3 5-1 Starodubtseva*

    What a shot Ons Jabeur.

Starodubtseva stays in the rally but a sumptuous drop shot down the line puts this match within touching distance for the Tunisian and she nails another to set up two match points.

Andy Murray owes me nowt! He's won majors when British men couldn't get close and he won Olympic gold in the best ever olympic games. He's had dreadful hip problems and is still competitive.
