An achievement that has to be up there for his best is last year's Aussie Open where he played two 5 hour 5 set matches including the longest match of his career with a resurfaced hip. Something that normally prevents normal function never mind elite sport. How he did that and then nearly beat another player in the 3rd round might well be up there as one of his Greatest achievements

Who do these people think they are telling anyone when to retire, from any job. Still in the top 50, could easily have another couple of good years left - if he wants, which is all that matters.

Phew. Caroline Garcia emerges from a rather messy game with her break of serve intact - just. The 16th seed is a game away from the first set.

I think for me it's also return on investment. When you understand how hard he's working and all the professionalism around his diet, the sacrifices he's making to be away from his family. He is as committed as anyone.

So then when he comes out, beginning of a new season and he's lost two matches in a month, there is no return. When you've been number one in the world and achieved everything that he has, that is not going to do him any favours mentally.

He looked lost and I hope that he can really find the next goal to try to work towards to see him play better on the match court and get some wins under the belt.

    Osaka 3-4 Garcia*

The crowd are responding positively to the resistance being shown by Naomi Osaka here and the two-time champion is able to get over the line after seeing off those break points to stay in contention in the first set. That will certainly do her confidence no harm.

Andy Murray is disappointed because he knows he can play better than that. It was a shame that he didn't use the crowd and he wasn't enjoying himself on the court.

When I see Murray play his best tennis, it's when he's using all that energy but I think he's going to have mental support every week because now everyone's thinking maybe it is the last time.

Hopefully he picks himself back up because the tennis he was playing in Brisbane was excellent.

    Murray 4-6 2-6 2-6 Etcheverry

    Tim Henman
Former British number one on Eurosport

It was a painful watch. To me, Andy Murray looked lost on the court and he looked pretty lost off the court.

It's difficult when you're 36 years old and achieved what he's achieved in the game. You want to see him out on court enjoying himself and reaping the rewards of all the hard work that he puts in on the practice court back home and in the gym.

It's a tough one, He needs to go away, analyse this with his team and his family and decide where he wants to go next.

A first opportunity - and it's seized by Caroline Garcia.

Naomi Osaka invited pressure with that double fault at deuce and she can't escape, missing a forehand to concede the break.

  20. Break point Garciapublished at 11:03 Greenwich Mean Time 15 January

    *Osaka 2-2 Garcia

It looked like it could be a long wait before either player gets a chance to trouble the other given the way both have started on serve.

But from 30-15 behind Caroline Garcia works her way to deuce, and a double fault gives the the 16th seed a first break point.
