"Jack Whelbourne skated his heat superbly and is the fourth fastest qualifier. Don't write him off - he could be a dark horse in this 1500m event. I am confident he can pull something special out here."

"That will make Eve feel better. It was just the one, but it will help to settle the nerves. It hasn't been a great start but it is only 3-1 after four ends."

Curlers can burn up to 1800 calories during a game, which isn't that surprising considering they spend nearly three energy-sapping hours manically brushing the ice.

    Jackie Lockhart
2002 world curling gold medallist on BBC TV

"Our girls are not far away so they do not have to panic. But they have to get back to basics and keep it simple. A double gets Britain straight back in the game."

    Steve Cram
    BBC Sport curling commentator

"It's not the start Eve Muirhead's team wanted and against the head they have lost three shots in the first three ends - and it has been somewhat of their own making. The Swedes are playing fine and taking their shots."

  9. Curlingpublished at 10:46 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2014

High-fives from Sweden as they knock Britain's rocks out of the circle. The momentum is with the defending champions. How will Britain respond? Eve Muirhead with the final stone... "Get it," scream the British girls, but their shouts are in vain and they lose two shots to fall 3-0 behind.

    Steve Cram
    BBC Sport curling commentator

"All of these shots are a learning experience and you're seeing how the ice is playing. The result is important but also how the team play and you don't want to play badly in the first match.

"But it's not been a good start for Britain. In the first end everyone looked nervous. It's pretty full in here, probably about 90%, but we have not seen the venue completely full yet.

"It's important Britain do not panic. It's early stages and they want to strike back, but if the opportunity is not there you have to be patient."

"That was a superb skate by Elise Christie. She didn't panic and kept her head and came round wide for a good win. It was a flying finish by Charlotte Gilmartin and a great performance by her too.

"The disqualification of Russia's Tatiana Borodulina for two false starts in the opening heat was amazing. She must have been so nervous."

Has Charlotte Gilmartin qualified for the quarter-finals? It's close, very close, but the Briton's last-gasp dip in the third heat was perfectly timed and the 23-year-old joins team-mate Elise Christie in the quarter-finals.

  14. Short Track Speed Skatingpublished at 10:33 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2014

A trouble-free and composed race from Britain's Elise Christie who wins the heat in 44.775 and progresses to the quarter-finals. The top two qualify and it was home favourite Sofia Prosvirnova who trailed Christie in second.

    Jackie Lockhart

"Eve Muirhead is such a perfectionist. If she does not perform at 100% she will crucify herself. Her team are very consistent.

"You are not going to win the game in the first or second end, you are going to win it in the ninth or tenth end."

  17. Curlingpublished at 10:31 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2014

Eve Muirhead with the last stone in end two but it's a steal for Sweden, though, and the defending champions ease 1-0 ahead.
