A second gold of the Games for Germany thanks to Maria Hoefl-Riesch. Nicole Hosp won silver for Austria (+0.40) with American Julia Mancuso (+0.53) taking bronze.

  2. Gold Medalpublished at 11:45 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2014

An explosion of joy from Maria Hoefl-Riesch, who carried the flag for Germany at the opening ceremony. A third Olympic gold medal for the German, who becomes women's super combined Olympic champion. Her combined time was 2:34.62. She was fifth fastest in the downhill and third quickest in the slalom.

One competitor remaining in the women's super combined and all eyes are on American Julia Mancuso. What have you got, Julia? Austria's Nicole Hosp, currently second, is guaranteed a medal as is Germany's Maria Hoefl-Riesch who is occupying the top spot.

If you want to be a slalom skier then you must be smooth, quick and light off your edges and dance on the snow. That's according to former Olympian Emma Carrick-Anderson.

"You want to be at the next gate as fast as possible," she explains. "You can't be aggressive through the ski. If you are too hard they will go sideways. It's all about being light, but you have to charge, you can't wait for the gate to come to you.

"You also have to do attention switching, like driving a car. You use your peripheral vision, so you are very aware what is coming up two gates ahead but very focused on where you are right now."

My word, over at the Ice Cube Curling Centre the inner circle looks like a rock pool. A phalanx of granite surrounds the target and Sweden have the final throw. The captain slides forward, knocks a few rocks out of the way and, after close examination, it's Britain who come out on top to level at 3-3 after six ends.

"Rocking party atmosphere here at the slalom finish with a pumping stezza, impromptu competing three-man band with trumpet, flugelhorn thing and accordion and a massive, and I mean massive, roar for Russian Yakovishina. So loud I can't hear myself type. The glaring floodlights, despite it being only mid-afternoon, add to the vibe. Can only imagine what Schladming slalom must be like. Jolly, I'd say."

Phew. That was breathless stuff at the Iceberg Skating Palace but we must now turn our attention to the women's super combined because the competition is starting to, well, hot up. Nicole Hosp is dancing on the slopes, twisting and turning, and the Austrian eases into gold medal position, taking the lead with a 51.07-second effort in the slalom.

"Amazing, Jack Whelbourne into 1500m short track final. I thought he skated a perfect race there."

  11. Short Track Speed Skatingpublished at 11:26 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2014

Jack Whelbourne becomes the first British male to reach the 1500m short track speed skating final. He will no doubt now worry a little less at having spent £4000 on two pairs of boots.

    Wilf O’Reilly
Former Olympic short track speed skater on BBC TV

"Jack needed to stay out of trouble. That was a superb race, lots of pushing and shoving. I said he was looking good in the heat and he has made history by reaching the final."

  13. Short Track Speed Skatingpublished at 11:24 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2014

Jack Whelbourne, turquoise safety helmet and goggles, is sucking in the oxygen while waiting to learn whether he's reached the final. And, then, the announcement is made - and Whelbourne punches the air upon learning he's through to the final.

Jack Whelbourne seems content to lurk in the shadows, following in his rivals' slipstream before making a move with three laps to go... The Briton is currently second...

Here we go. Jack Whelbourne in the men's 1500m semi-final and the Briton is on the inside. He's first coming out of the corner and if he replicates his composed performance in the heats then he could make the final.

    Steve Cram
    BBC Sport curling commentator

"That could've gone three to Sweden, but it went one to Great Britain, so instead of being 6-1 down, it's only 3-2 after five ends.

"It also puts a bit of pressure on to the Swedes. It was a nervous start for both sides, but Britain have come back in the last two ends. They are slowly starting to find their feet now."

  17. Curlingpublished at 11:16 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2014

Sweden have the last stone in the fifth end but will their captain hold her nerve? Nope. She crumbles like a freshly baked cookie, leaving a British piece of granite in the centre circle - and that means Britain have stolen a point! The reigning champions are back in what we call the mixer and have reduced the arrears to 3-2.

    Rob Hodgetts

"The course, set by the Swiss coach, is "great" according to four-time Olympian Emma Carrick-Anderson, with several sets of vertical gates, some tricky hairpin gates and plenty if terrain and rhythm changes."

  19. Postpublished at 11:10 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2014

    Rob Hodgetts
    BBC Sport in Sochi

"Emma Carrick-Anderson finished eighth as a 16-year-old in the combined event at the Albertville Games in 1992 and she has been giving me the inside track on skiing slalom.

"'Slalom skiers have to be a lot more agile with a lot of coordination and quick reactions," she says. "It's not so important for a slalom skier to be able to push a lot of weights, like it is for a downhiller. That's what makes the combined so interesting.'"

The first gold medal of the day will be awarded to the winner of the women's super combined and we will know who that is at about 1200 GMT. Czech Sarka Strachova is the current leader, completing the slalom in 50.10 seconds.
