Jack Whelbourne is down! It's a nightmare for the Briton, who hits the deck as the field bunches up in reaction to Victor An's attack on the front. Such a shame for the 22-year-old.
Lots of jostling for position as Jack Whelbourne momentarily drops to one of the back before battling his way back up and sitting on the shoulders if the top three.
We're away! Britain's Jack Whelbourne has slotted into fourth of seven skaters after the first lap. Just the 12 to go....
Charles Hamelin is the first to be announced, the Canadian is an eight-time world champion. The second to be announced is Britain's Jack Whelbourne, with number 219 on his helmet.
The noise levels switch up a couple of notches as Russian Victor An, winner of this event at the 2006 Winter Olympics when competing for South Korea, is introduced to the crowd. Will this be the fourth gold medal for the Russian? Can Whelbourne make more history?
Wilf O’Reilly
Former Olympic short track speed skater on BBC TV
"Russia's Victor An has got to be my favourite for this distance because he's been skating incredibly well all through the season."
Here we go, then. The skaters contesting the medal final are on the ice, Princess Anne is in position in the stands. We're all set.

"The information system here in the Iceberg only shows six names at a time, so I entirely overlooked starter number seven in this final: world number one Lee Han-bin of South Korea. Which goes to emphasise the point: Jack Whelbourne will never race in a tougher line-up.
"Top five would be an exceptional achievement. A medal would be the race of his life."
Steve Cram
BBC Sport curling commentator
"The deficit is reduced to one at 5-4, going into the ninth end. But Sweden are in the position they want to be in with two ends to go. There's a little bit of consternation on the faces of the GB camp."
Frenchman Sebastien Lepape wins the men's 1,500m 'B' final and will be classified eighth after Korea's Se Yeong Park slips and cleanly takes out Sjinkie Knegt of Netherlands, who was leading. They clatter into the heavily padded walls, but thankfully both look unhurt.

"Somebody just told me Jack Whelbourne should use the "Steven Bradbury strategy" in his final. Bradbury, you may recall, was the Australian who won gold in 2006 when all other skaters collided and fell at the last corner.
"I'm not sure Whelbourne necessarily does need that strategy but there's certainly a chance of a repeat. This is a stacked final - Charles Hamelin (Can) and Viktor Ahn (Rus) the favourites in my book, JR Celski of the US not far behind, two strong Chinese athletes - and it could be chaos on that last bend. If Whelbourne can stay in touch, he has a shot at a medal."
The calm before the storm. It's all quiet on the ice at the Iceberg Skating Palace as we prepare for the final of the men's 1,500m. First up, it's the 'B' final, for those who didn't quite make cut. The medal final - and Jack Whelbourne - follows at 12:11 GMT.
British bobsleigher John Jackson on Twitter:, external Things are going well in our preparation camp. A few more days yet before we make the move to Sochi.

"It's now 5-3 to Sweden against Britain after seven ends, but this game is far from over."
Three ends still to go...

"Jack Whelbourne's 1500m final is at 12:11 GMT. I cannot emphasise enough how tough that final line-up is but the sport's a lottery. Tune in.
"Elly Oldroyd is sat next to me belting out short-track stats on national radio so if you're on the move, you'll hear the final on @bbc5live."
Good morning one and all. Lawrence Barretto in the hot seat and what a moment for me to take over, eh?
Last night, British short track speed skater Jack Whelbourne tweeted his girlfriend, external @Elise_Christie saying: "Bet u I wake up tomorrow already a #champion will win the races 100 times over in my dreams tonight #winning."
In just over 15 minutes' time, that dream could become a historic reality.

British skeleton medal prospect Lizzy Yarnold has had her first two official training runs at the Sanki Sliding Centre and it is very promising as she records the first and fourth quickest times. Shelley Rudman is still working out the course and was 15th and 16th. Rival, Noelle Pikus-Pace from the United States, also off the pace in 11th and 13th. Interesting to note the Russian trio, who will have had hundreds of training runs on the course since it was built, all had top 10 times for both runs.
BBC Radio Scotland's David McDaid:, external This, we'd call in Scotland a bit of a guddle. The house is packed.
