Ferdi: I once went snowboarding, one of the best holidays I’ve ever had. Throwing yourself down a mountain is so much fun. Don’t think I’ll ever afford to go again but glad I went - in total awe of these guys though...

It's often all or nothing in this event. Make it down in one piece and a decent score is on the cards. The pursuit of that, thought, can lead to a faceplant in the snow. Two more, then the British pair. Is that the sun poking through? I've just seen a shot from the top of the slope at the Phoenix Snow Park. The crowd at the bottom are like ants...

Make that four. America's Raymond Gerard into second with 82.55. The mountain is getting higher (not literally) for the British pair.

Earlier on, Jamie Nicholls could only finish eighth in his heat with a score of 71.56. With four riders down, three have already posted in excess of 74. Tough school. The top six qualify.

Despite reaching the slopestyle final four years ago many think Team GB's Billy Morgan’s best chance of success in Pyeongchang will come in big air later in the Games.

Much of that is built off the back of his historic ‘quad cork’ in late 2014, but the man himself insists he has no preference.

“I’m happy with both events,” he tells BBC Sport before his first run in slopestyle.

“My main concern is with my knee. I tore one ACL before Sochi and had that rebuilt after the Games, but now I’ve got issues with the other one.”

And, if you've forgotten, this is the event in which Jenny Jones won Great Britain's first Winter Olympic medal on snow.

Warning: Things could get emotional if you watch this...

Remember, slopestyle is about tricks, execution and style, rather than speed.

This is the heat of death, it really is.

Trying to pick six riders out of here is going to be very, very difficult.

    Jenny Jones
2014 Olympic bronze medallist snowboarder on BBC TV

A factor that's quite important for these guys is carrying their speed. If they can't carry their speed then they won't be able to clear those big jumps - which is essential to performing their tricks.

Dare I say that it looks a little warmer in the mountains for the second heat in the men's slopestyle? It's all relative, mind. Canada's Tyler Nicholson, wearing what looks like a sweater knitted by his nan, is first out of the gate. He lasts about two seconds before being sat down. Rowan Coultas and Billy Morgan are 10th and 11th to go.

We've just had the final men's training session ahead of Sunday's downhill - traditionally regarded as the blue riband event of the Winter Olymipcs.

The Norwegians are looking strong at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre with Kjetil Jansrud, bronze four years ago in Sochi, in the top three in all of training runs and Aksel Lund Svindal hovering around the top positions too.

Austria's Matthias Mayer has also been consistent in training and is in decent shape as he looks to defend his Olympic title from Russia.

We'll know for sure tomorrow - it's live on the BBC at 02:00 GMT.

  13. 'Always chasing new tricks'published at 04:25 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2018

Great Britain's Billy Morgan on BBC One: "You can expect me to try my hardest, I will try my hardest. I don't like to think about whether I can get a medal or not because it's such a roll of the dice on the day - if everyone falls over on the day then I win!

"I like to try and mix training up as much as possible. I try and bring my previous acrobat training into what I do now and so I include lots of gymnastics and trampolining stuff too.

"I've managed to pull off the 'quad' which was amazing but it's also the scariest thing I've ever done. Having big air in the Olympics now means I'll probably have to give it another go.

"We're always chasing those new tricks, as the tricks have obviously moved on quite a bit since then."
