Heartbreak for Holdener. The Swiss is overtaken by American Mikaela Shiffrin, who is bidding for her second gold of the Games after winning the giant slalom last week.

Shriffin, arguably the greatest slalom skier of all time, clocks a time of 40.52 seconds on her favoured run, giving her a total time of 2:21.87 - a lead of 0.47 seconds.

Neil Wallington: Another final between Canada and USA women goes down to the wire. What is it about these teams that they produce such thrilling gold medal contests?

Women's gold medal match: Canada 2-2 USA

A pair of pliers couldn't separate these two sides. Can an extra 20 minutes? It's time for, er, more time. Overtime!

Although we might only see 20 seconds, of course. Because it's sudden-death.

    Unreal drama!

Laura Stacey's attempt leaves her smashing into hoardings behind the goal. The Canadian fans wince...and then realise the USA are on the counter.

Monique Lamoureux-Morando keeps her cool and makes it 2-2. The Americans in the arena absolutely lose their heads.

"USA! USA! USA!" is all you can hear.

...Holdener attacks from the off, opening up a lead of over a second by the halfway stage. The favourite finishes with an advantage of +0.65. No wonder she's waving and smiling at the camera at the bottom of the slope. Bar raised.

Right, what's happening here? Slovakia's Petra Vlhova is currently leading the standings. She won't win. Ten more to go - starting with Switzerland's reigning world champion Wendy Holdener...

Britain’s Dave Ryding said too many mistakes in his second run cost him a medal today.

He told me: “I feel I could have done more but others will feel the same way.

“I’ve finished ninth at an Olympics and I’ll accept that.”

Ryding is looking to push for a medal in Beijing 2022.

“Andre Myhrer has just won and he’s 35, Mario Matt won in Sochi at the age of 35 and I’ll be 35 in four years’ time! I came to skiing quite late and I’m really motivated to keep carrying on progressing.”

Face paint, Maple Leaf flags, foam letters spelling out C-A-N-A-D-A - if it's red and white then the fans of the defending champions have got it in Pyeongchang.

But they are almost silenced when US forward Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson slaps one towards the far corner, forcing Canada keeper Shannon Szabados to stick out her right arm to block.

End to end stuff! Canada are trying to put this one to bed, Maddie Rooney again need to stop Melodie Daoust opening up a two-goal lead for the defending champions.

Then the Americans storm up on the counter, Brianna Decker denied by the Canada keeper. Frantic start to the third period.

Decker also got cleaned by an over-exuberant tackle on the rebound for her troubles.

If you were watching the men's ski cross yesterday you will have seen Canada's Chris Del Bosco's horrific crash, that saw the 35-year-old taken away on a stretcher.

Team Canada have confirmed Del Bosco is now in a stable condition, though unsurprisingly has taken quite a beating...

Andre Myhrer becomes the first Swedish winner of this title since 1980. Henrik Kristoffersen cuts a forlorn figure as he makes his way down the track. What a race, it's the two big men that have taken the gold and silver - they were dominant in the final World Cup race leading into the Olympics when Zenhaeusern beat Myhrer into first but, today, it's role reversal.

Two down, one to go... and Canada are looking good to retain their Olympic crown. It's far from a formality though. Settle down down and strap in for the final 20-minute third.

Ice hockey women's final: Canada 2-1 USA

    Caroline Chapman
    BBC Sport in Pyeongchang

I remember hating hockey when I was at school. Bad memories of taking too many sticks to the ankle.

Olympic ice hockey is like that but 100 times more brutal.

There are players being sandwiched by their rivals into hoardings, while others are upended on to the ice.

I overheard one spectator say that the women's matches in Pyeongchang have been miles better than the men's. More aggressive and more attacking.

It certainly seems that way from the first two periods in this gold-medal match.

'What about Dave Ryding?' I hear you cry. The Rocket ended up finishing ninth with a time of 1:40.16, 1.17 seconds adrift of gold medallist Myhrer.

A fantastic achievement for the Lancastrian, who learned his trade on Britain’s dry ski slopes and still raced on them until about a decade ago.

His GB team-mate Laurie Taylor finished in 26th on his Olympic debut.
