It's unthinkable for curling for neither of the Canadian teams, the men or the women, to be in the final. It really is a huge shock.

    Gold 2006, gold 2010, gold 2014.

Canada have had an inspired run in the men's curling.

But now the US have one stone, a fairly straightforward one, to knock them out...

When you've got the hammer in the last end, you want to try and keep the front, and the house, as clear as possible. So Canada will be trying to place guards to make life as difficult for USA as possible.

The USA are hoping to return to the Olympic podium for the first time since winning bronze in 2006. Their skip John Shuster was the lead in that team in Turin, which also included Joe Polo, in action again.

Shuster was the USA skip in 2010 and 2014 but struggled after Sochi and was even briefly dropped from the team. He credits losing 30lb in weight and the birth of his second child as providing the motivation to regain his place.

He's in good voice out there now.

A blank would have been better for Canada there, because they would have taken the hammer into the 10th end. Now Canada trail by one, and need a steal, just to keep the game going.

Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards, who competed in the ski jump for Great Britain in the 1988 Games, hopes youngsters can be inspired by what they have seen in Pyeongchang and take part in sport.

"If you like it, go to an inside ski slope, have a lesson and go from there," said Edwards. "I've liked watching the ski jump, because that's my sport, but I've also liked the downhill events, the unpredictability of short track speed skating and events like ski cross and slopestyle.

"It's nice that people still remember me from Calgary in 1988. Live your dreams, who knows, that ambition may become a reality one day."

Canada have been on every Olympic podium since the sport was reintroduced to the Games in 1998, and they are the reigning men’s and women’s champions.

Such is their strength in depth that neither of those 2014 gold medallists earned selection to defend their titles.

Could the men be on their way out?

  18. 'Great Britain have been phenomenal'published at 13:19 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2018

More from Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards, who has given his thoughts on the British team.

He said: "As a whole, South Korea has been fantastic and has hosted a fantastic winter Olympics. Great Britain as a whole have been phenomenal, and we are not a winter Olympic nation but for Dave Ryding to come ninth in the slalom is unheard of.

“We aren’t known as a winter nation and I don’t think we ever will be. We have got indoor ski slopes and that is the best we ever do. But if we spent more money or changed the way we spend the money, like buy a chalet in Austria and all the athletes can live there, we would produce more medals without giving individual federations millions.

“If they spent the money better and wiser we would do better.”

A massive, massive end for the USA. They take two in the eighth, and they will have the hammer in the tenth, too. It would be a huge shock if Canada don't make the final here.

  20. 'It's about taking part'published at 13:14 Greenwich Mean Time 22 February 2018

Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards, who competed in the 1988 Winter Olympics for Great Britain in the ski jump despite having no facilities to train in and no funding, has been talking to BBC Sport today about athletes he has enjoyed watching in Pyeongchang.

He said: "One story that made me smile was the American skier in the half-pipe Elizabeth Swaney (who you can watch in the video above). She was representing Hungary through her grandmother. She used all the World Cup events to get enough points to compete. She did not do any tricks but was still at the Olympic Games.

"I would like to think she is doing it to get some attention and get better in the future, not to just get some publicity. They were comparing it to my story, but she exploited a loophole whereas I didn’t. I qualified for the Olympic Games for my country and didn’t find a grandmother for Lithuania and jump for them."

“It’s great these different countries coming to the Winter Olympics," he said. "Countries like Ethiopia and Kenya could do really well in cross-country skiing if they could train in Norway for a while. It’s about taking part and I’m just as enthusiastic by these unusual athletes from different countries as the best athletes.

"One medal that was really nice to see was Ester Ledecka of the Czech Republic in the women’s super-G. When she won, she looked at the result, she said I can’t have won, and she did not believe she won the medal. That was refreshing."
