    Men's 5,000m

Olympic 5,000m champion Nils van der Poel has summoned up the energy to talk to reporters in the mixed zone:

“Right now I am quite empty and tired, I’ll try to come up with something to say. A few seconds ago I was emotional.

“I cannot imagine performing like this in such a race. We knew nothing at the ice and Patrick Roest (silver) had a tough story, he had nothing to go on. I am really happy with how it turned out.”

"I don’t remember too much about it. It was a solid start, how I wanted it. I was keeping it steady and feeling confident halfway through the race.

“But then when the second 9.3 came up I thought 'I’ve got to go now'. I was launching for it and it was the Olympic race, that was all I had.”

    Women's ice hockey

China take a huge step towards the quarter-finals. They have won 2-1 after a shootout.

Mi Le, who is better known as Hannah Miller and was born in Canada, was the only player to score in 10 attempts.

The hosts now have five points from three games and are third in Group B.

In a bid to close the gap with traditional hockey powers, hosts China have stocked their ice hockey squads with Canadian and US-born players.

The men's team counts 10 China-born players in their 25-man squad, while the women list 11 of their 23 players as having been born in the country.

  5. 'I tried to go for all or nothing'published at 11:06 Greenwich Mean Time 6 February 2022

Three-time Olympic 5,000m champion Sven Kramer has been reflecting on finishing ninth this time in the last individual race of his career.

There was an odd expletive which we've removed but this is the gist of it.

"The moral of the story is just that this was my last 5,000m. To be honest, I haven't really thought about that up until now. I just wanted to race a very good 5,000m," Kramer said.

"That didn't work out the way I wanted. I tried to go for all or nothing and I knew that I had to skate around 6:10 for a podium. I could have skated safely around 6:12, 6:13, but that won't give you anything.

"I would have loved to skate around 6:10. But yeah, it just wasn't there today.

"I’m looking forward to the team pursuit and the mass start. I knew it was going to be my last one. When I went to the rink, I knew this was the last time I would skate the 5,000m."

There was no separating China and Japan who are now in OT. The hosts think they have a winner but the Japanese goalkeeper is deemed to have been pushed into her own net after a lengthy video review.

If you think VAR is bad in football, that decision took nearly four minutes.

Makayla Gerken Schofield drops down to seventh. But hold on a QF magically appears next to her name. The 22-year-old Briton is on her way into the final.

No such joy for her sister Leonie, whose run ends with a score of 62.06. That leaves her in 16th with one athlete remaining, Kazakhstan's Anastassiya Gorodko.

She just took half-a-second to get back into her rhythm after she landed after her first jump.

She doesn't improve so you'll take Thursday's qualifying score which puts her in fourth at the moment.

Makayla Gerken Schofield posts a score of 67.96 in her second qualification run.

Some great turns in there but no improvement on the 70.18 she recorded first time around, which currently leaves her in sixth.

Long way to go but as it stands she'll qualify for the final, with the top 10 going through.

Coming up we have the second qualifying run for the women's moguls, featuring British pair Makayla and Leonie Gerken Schofield.

The sisters were born in Chelmsford but grew up in France from a young age, where they learnt to ski.

Part of their training regime included skiing off a ramp and into water.

    Aaaand breathe.

Sweden's Nils van der Poel becomes the new Olympic champion in the most dramatic of circumstances, with Patrick Roest of the Netherlands bumped down to silver medal right at the last.

Roest looks devastated, though I'm sure in time he will be rightly proud of his achievement.

Hallgeir Engebraaten of Norway takes the bronze.

He was two or three seconds down. To close that gap in the last few laps was phenomenal.
