This is an excellent start for Great Britain, couldn't be better.

USA will retain the hammer of course but Great Britain leading by four in the early stages in this match, such an important match for Great Britain.

United States are unbeaten so far but up against it already.

Despite us doubting Tina Hermann's chances after her run, she's still in third place.

Dutch slider Kimberly Bos - the European champion - clocks a time to leave her fourth, while Germany's 2019 silver medallist Jacqueline Loelling is fifth.

Germany's Hannah Neise still leads the way, with Australia's Jaclyn Narracott in second ahead of Hermann.

Great British speed skater Cornelius Kersten competed in the 500m, finishing 25th, and was pleased with his day's work.

"It was my fastest opener ever," he said. "That’s what we were aiming for today – doing a fast opener and seeing what happens afterwards.

“I had a small slip in the first corner so I lost a bit of speed there, but overall I’m happy."

Kersten, who is Team GB's first long-track skater since 1992, is now focusing on his favoured event, the 1000m which takes place on Friday.

He's had a number of top 10 results at World Cups this season and said: "I’m really looking forward to the 1000m now. I’m feeling snappy, feeling good.

“We’ve got six days until the 1000m so it’s just about zoning into the final details, getting fast, thinking snappy and we’re there.”

You've got to be utterly bonkers to want to throw yourself head-first down an ice chute with your hands down by your side. At up to 90mph.

Australia are bidding for a first medal in the women's skeleton and Jaclyn Narracott starts heat three with a quick run.

Narracott is married to Britain's Dom Parsons, by the way. You will remember he won the men's bronze in Pyeongchang - Britain's first men's Olympic skeleton in 70 years - before retiring a year later.

Yesterday, the inquest started into why Britain's skeleton racers were unable to reach their previous heights.

British slider Matt Weston said "questions need to be raised" over the team's failure to win a medal in Beijing.

Weston was 15th and Marcus Wyatt 16th in the men's event, while Laura Deas and Brogan Crowley are out of medal contention in the women's competition.

BBC commentator John Jackson, who won bobsleigh bronze in 2014, criticised the sleds used by the British team.

"Something's not right," Weston told BBC Sport.

It was great while it lasted. But Britain's dominance of the women's skeleton is over.

The nation has won a medal in all five of the Games where the event has been held, including golds at the past three Olympics.

This year, it wasn't to be. The Beijing 2022 medals will be decided when runs three and four take place this afternoon, but British pair Laura Deas and Brogan Crowley are out of contention.

This a big match for Eve Muirhead's GB rink.

They've lost two of their three matches and can't afford many more defeats.

The USA have three wins from three, though they've played the so-called weaker teams in the group.

It's a good chance for GB to get another W on the board and their quest for the semis on track.

And when you add on the wind chill factor, it will feel more like -36C.

Freestyle skiing, cross country skiing, biathlon and ski jumping are all taking place there over the next days.

The top 30 are going to come back, it's not going to take long before we know who the large hill Olympic champion is.

All the evidence so far is that Ryoyu Kobayashi has what it takes to deliver for what would be a phenomenal success for Japan.
