That was fantastic skating from the Dutch, they pretty much led start to finish, only momentarily losing the lead but Schulting made sure.

    It was outstanding.

It's all about keeping your calm, there are 27 laps.

You want the top surface of the ice a little bit softer so the blades get that little bit more grip.

    Onto the A Final then.

The Dutch are the favourites to win gold, having dominated the sport in the past couple of years.

It is sure to be an emotional occasion for them, too.

Lara van Ruijven (pictured above), who was part of the team which won bronze in the 2018 relay, died in July 2020 aged 27.

The then-reigning world 500m champion, Van Ruijven had fallen ill at a training camp in France and died days later from complications relating to an autoimmune disorder.

As skaters slide, slip and scatter in the B Final, it is easy to see why.

Big shock! China's Dajing Wu does not make the A Final - that's where the medals are dished out.

Kazahkstan's Abzal Azhgaliyev finishes second, 0.03 seconds ahead of Wu. Korea's Daeheon Hwang is penalised and out.

Wu - the defending Olympic champion - goes into the B Final. What's the point of that? Well, if there are disqualifications in the A Final then there is a chance of still nabbing a medal.
