We've still not had any official confirmation of what happened in the first heat of this women's 1,500m.

Canada's Courtney Sarault won heat four in two minutes 20.365 seconds, the fastest time we have seen so far.

No shocks so far. Two heats remain.

Watch out for Suzanne Schulting of the Netherlands in the final heat. She is world and European champion.

  2. 'Been frustrating to watch'published at 11:50 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

Great Britain's former world champion Elise Christie did not qualify for these Olympics and last year announced her retirement because of injury.

Instead she is working as a pundit for BBC TV today, commenting on the event in which she used to compete.

"It's been quite interesting watching short track, it's a bit behind at the minute at worldwide level because Covid has stopped a lot of the racing," she said.

"They also had significant rule changes during that time, so a lot of the athletes out there racing don't really understand what they're allowed and not allowed to do and they haven't had much practice doing it.

"Short track has been frustrating to watch this time round. It's been nice watching my team mates, but I wanted to be out there winning a medal."

We have a new leader. Russian Ilia Burov, a bronze medal winner in Pyeongchang four years ago, lands with a very punchy 129.50 effort to move more than three points clear of second placed Swiss Pirmin Werner in the Final 1.

When you consider there are less than three points covering second to seventh in the standings so far you get a sense of just how far ahead of the competition that effort was.

If he can repeat it in Final 2 shortly, he will be a strong candidate for gold.

There seems to be an issue with the lap counter. It appears to be stuck at 11.5 laps.

The official Beijing 2022 website is not showing any times for that first heat.

South Korea's defending champion Choi Minjeong, the world record holder, won it by a mile but will that result stand?

There was a change in placings in the final lap - possibly the extra lap - behind her.

Kim A-lang, another South Korea skater, wins the second heat.

The 1,500m should be 13.5 laps in total but there seems to be doubt over whether that was the case in the first heat.

We're completely in the dark with what has happened.

An official went over to talk to the coaches but no official announcement has been made.

The second heat is now going to begin regardless.

  7. Confusion at the short track speed skatingpublished at 11:36 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

What has gone on here then?

There's confusion at the end of the first heat of the women's 1,500m with a suggestion the race might have gone on a lap too many!

The first medal will be handed out shortly after 12:45 GMT in the men's 5,000m relay.

Those women's 1,500m skaters will be busy. Their final concludes the action at 13:18.

Great Britain's Kat Thomson has sadly had to withdraw on medical grounds.

Pirmin Werner of Switzerland's score of 126.24 is still top of the pops with Chinese home hopes Guangpu Qi and Zongyang Jia in third and fifth respectively.

American Justin Schoenefeld is in seventh place. One of those who needs more from jump two.

Swiss Pirmin Werner leads the standings after 10 jumps with a score of 126.24 ahead of American Christopher Lillis on 125.67 and Pyeongchang champion Oleksandr Abramenko - who has warmed up for this with seven days in isolation with Covid - third with a score of 123.53.

They will all be heading into Final 2 where the medals are decided at midday.

You may have to bear with me while I explain how this men's aerials final works.

Firstly is 'Final 1'. In this section each skier jumps twice, in reverse order from their qualification scores.

The best six scores from Final 1 will then progress to the main event - Final 2.

In Final 2 each skier will just jump once - best score wins - and the scores from the first stage are not carried over.

    All clear?
