A curious error from Russia's Evgenii Klimov, who leaves his stone in no man's land.

Russia have the hammer and, with time running out, this is a chance they have to take to score big.

  2. Slovakia secure spot in semi-finals after shock win against USApublished at 07:53 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

A penalty shootout quarter-final defeat? Those ones sting.

The United States, one of the favourites for gold, are left nursing the pain as underdogs Slovakia advance.

    • But the USA were knocked out of the men's ice hockey with a surprise quarter-final lose to Slovakia.

Round-robin: Great Britain 6-2 Russian Olympic Committee (after six ends)

Hammy McMillan and Bobby Lammie doing a lot of great domestique work for Great Britain, getting things well set up for Bruce Mouat and Grant Hardie to do the delicate, headling, point-stealing stuff.

Their Russian counterparts are not matching McMillan and Lammie's accuracy and cunning.

Russia desperately need some points and soon.

Sergei Glukhov nudges a nice stone into the house, leaving his team lying two.

But Bruce Mouat has the granite in his hand. Can he change the scene?

Straight as a dye, solid as a rock. He bumps the closest Russian stone on the nose to send it skidding to the boards.

One for GB as the four-point lead is restored.

  6. Still to come...published at 07:36 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

Plenty of medals up for grabs, starting in the women's biathlon 4x6km relay from 07:45.

Then there's cross-country skiing silverware to be claimed in both the men's and women's events, with Great Britain's Andrew Young and James Clugnet compete.

China dominated in the men's aerial freestyle skiing and will be looking for glory from 11:00, before the women's ice hockey bronze medal match between Finland and Switzerland takes place.

And to top things off there is a host of short track speed skating medals to be won this afternoon.

Round-robin: Great Britain 5-2 Russian Olympic Committee (after five ends)

    Steve Cram
    Curling commentator on BBC TV

The Russian Olympic Committee have reduced the deficit by one but that's not enough really - it's been a tough first five ends for the ROC and it's a must-win match for them if they have any hope of advancing to the final four. They haven't been able to build good opportunities at all.

It's been job well done for Great Britain.

    "Gwan Bruce!"

One of Bruce Mouat's team-mates congratulations as he shunts a yellow stone out of contention with his last effort.

Sergei Glukhov puts his final stone into the bullseye to score one.

But Britain remain frustratingly out of reach at the halfway stage.

Round-robin: Great Britain 5-1 Russian Olympic Committee (after four ends)

Interesting fact from Olympic champion Rhonna Howie on commentary that at last year's World Championships they had a "sweepometer" which the various teams were invited to give their best effort on a piece of high-tech lino which then spat out stats on the speed and power of their brushwork.

Anyway, two stone left for each team. Russia with the hammer, Britain looking good to keep any opposition score to a minimum.

Sergei Glukhov was left attempting a frankly improbable triple plant shot to try and avoid Great Britain stealing a point against the head.

The sort of thing John Virgo would be proud of.

He can't match the bearded maverick of the baize though. Great Britain take another point. It is a long, long way back for the Russians now.

  11. Great Britain set to score in fourth endpublished at 07:05 Greenwich Mean Time 16 February 2022

Round-robin: Great Britain 4-1 Russian Olympic Committee (after three ends)

Bruce Mouat's final stone replaces a Russian rock in the entourage around the circle.

Over to you Sergei Glukhov to salvage something from the end for Russia. He has not had his eye in yet in this contest...

Round-robin: Great Britain 4-1 Russian Olympic Committee (after three ends)

A cagey end here. More intrigue and bluff than a border dispute. A whole platoon of guards surround the circle.

Bruce Mouat adds to the ranks with Great Britain lying one. Russia with two stones to come, Great Britain with one.

A wide open house for Bruce Mouat on his final stone after a Russian clear-out job on the penultimate slide.

The Great Britain skip duly accepts the invite, curling one to within four feet for the point to restore Great Britain's three-stone lead.

And here is Dave Ryding, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was OK. I left myself way too much to do and for some reason I didn't have my best skiing, it's disappointing, it is very tight and I was missing my A game really.

"No regrets in my career. I always do what I can, put out what I have got . Olympics won't define me because I have had a great career but you always want to top it off with something special. I think I have got another year, we'll keep going in the World Cup.

"There is always stress around performances and you sometimes want it too much, it is hard to say. To do it every run is fine margins, and it's tough.

"Everything felt fine, when you are skiing... I just knew I didn't have it, didn't have something - c'est la vie, I will go home to my fiancee and have a couple of days off, that's the most important thing, there are more things in the world than the Olympics."

Time to meet the Russian skip.

Sergei Glukhov, 29, could have been representing his country at the Summer Games. He was a promising junior tennis player, and had to make a choice between the two sports at the age of 17.

He opted for curling as it seemd to offer "more prospects".

He led his team to a fourth-place finish in last year's world championships in Alberta.

    Chemmy Alcott
Four-time Olympic alpine ski racer on BBC TV

I think Clement Noel started off this season showing us the level that slalom needs to be at - he raced unbelievably well at the World Cup in Val D'Isere and from then on everyone said it was going to be his year. Then he battled, he started straddling and that becomes a psychological issue and his performance dropped off so you knew he had this spark in him.

You can never write off the French, especially in big events they have this incredible passion. He's young, he's hungry and he has this new age way of skiing with a tight stance. I thought Johannes Strolz might win, but if Rocket Ryding couldn't win then Noel is a very worthy winner.
