This pipe is bulletproof. The moment we see someone off balance, the skis are off.

There’s no saving any kind of landing that isn’t perfect.

The pipe is doing the judges' job for them.

  2. 'She's still got plenty of time'published at 01:53 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2022

Zoe Atkin has still got plenty of time.

In qualifying, the one thing that separated Zoe from the top three is amplitude but she really pushed this run.

It’s all about the second and third runs now.

  3. Atkin falls in first runpublished at 01:50 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2022

But it is not a good start for Atkin. She nails four tricks but then can't hold the landing and ends up on her back on the ice.

It's a score of 18.75 but she has two more runs so can forget about this one.

  5. 'A perfect first run'published at 01:47 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2022

    Ed Leigh
    Snowboarding commentator on BBC TV

As far as building blocks go, that’s a perfect first run from Cassie Sharpe.

She moves into first position – a place she knows well after winning gold at Pyeongchang.

  6. Reigning champion Sharpe makes good startpublished at 01:47 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2022

    Women's freeski halfpipe final

"It's the Olympics baby," shouts out Canadian Cassie Sharpe after her run. She won this event four years ago and jumps to the top with a score of 89.

No wonder she's happy to be at the Games as she tore her anterior cruciate ligament in January 2021 and also fractured her femur, injuries that kept her out for most of the season.

Seventeen-year-old American Hanna Faulhaber is the first to register a score in the 80s, with an effort of 85.25.

She finished fourth in the World Championships last year and that's a very good opening effort.

  8. 'The wind is going to be a big factor'published at 01:37 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2022

Freestyle skiing - women's freeski halfpipe final

    Ed Leigh
    Snowboarding commentator on BBC TV

The wind is coming up the pipe and that is going to be a big factor today.

That’s why we are seeing the women slowing down, they just can’t get that speed.

American Carly Margulies is an incredibly resilient competitor as, even though she's only 24, she's already had six knee surgeries - the first of which came when she was only 14.

But she can't nail a landing and crashes heavily. She snaps off a bit of her ski in doing so, but she's OK and gets two more goes later on to nail a proper score.

Britain's Zoe Atkin will be going ninth in this first run.

China's Eileen Gu, the 18-year-old who has already picked up gold in the big air and silver in the slopestyle, will be going last.

  11. 'She doesn't need much'published at 01:32 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2022

    Tyler Harding
Olympic freestyle skier on BBC TV

The one thing about Zoe’s run is that it is extremely clean and her grabs are so defined.

I think she needs a 900, a lot of these girls are doing back-to-back 900s in the pipe and Zoe probably needs at least one of those to bump her score up a little bit.

All of the scores are very close, she doesn’t need much.

  12. 'She needs one bigger technical trick'published at 01:32 Greenwich Mean Time 18 February 2022

Freestyle skiing - women's freeski halfpipe final

    Jenny Jones
2014 Olympic bronze medallist snowboarder on BBC TV

It was hugely inspiring when Izzy Atkin won that bronze medal [at Pyeongchang in 2018] and I think that’s something Zoe will definitely take inspiration from, she will be motivated by that.

Zoe needs a 900 if she wants to bump onto the podium.

She has got brilliant technical grabs but I think she needs one bigger technical trick.

    Katie Falkingham

You might recognise the surname. Zoe Atkin is the younger sister of Izzy Atkin, who won Team GB's first Olympic medal on skis in Pyeongchang four years ago.

Nineteen-year-old Zoe will be hoping to follow in her sister's ski tracks onto the podium, and she's certainly got the ability to do so.

She burst onto the global stage at the age of 16 when she won a World Cup halfpipe event in December 2019.

She then won World Championship halfpipe bronze in 2021 and came fourth in this January’s X Games superpipe competition.

Great Britain are not on this list, but they have at least a silver in the bank because of the efforts of the men's curling team.
