Gymnastics is a tough old sport. When you can make it look easy, that's when you're doing a good job. We train six days a week, thirty plus hours a week to try and make it look as easy as possible. It is just a testament to how hard they train that they make it look so simple.

Will Biles try new skill?published at 17:53 British Summer Time 30 July

    Gymnastics - women's team final

The USA lead after the first rotation and they are heading to bars next.

Will we see Simone Biles attempt a new skill there?

Last week she submitted one to the International Gymnastics Federation and so if she performs it here, it will get named after her.

It would be the sixth skill to bear her name and she would become the only active gymnast to have skills named after her on all four apparatus.

See if you can spot it - it's described as "a clear hip circle forward with one-and-a-half turns to handstand".

In other words, when she starts in a handstand on the upper bar, the American would dip her body to travel around the bar and then rise back into a handstand before doing one and a half pirouettes (540 degrees) and then stop to hold a handstand position.

Smiles beam across the faces of Heather Watson and Katie Boulter. Rightly so.

Jubilant scenes as the British pair wrap up a notable 6-2 6-3 win over German pair Angie Kerber and Laura Siegemund in the women's doubles.

Union Jacks, already unfurled to use as fans, are waved in their direction as they are cheered off court.

And outside Watson and Boulter are mobbed for selfies as they head back towards the locker room.

Next they will face Brazilian sixth seeds Beatriz Haddad Maia and Luisa Stefani in the second round.

GB off to great start on floorpublished at 17:47 British Summer Time 30 July

    Gymnastics - women's team final

    Sonia Oxley

Great Britain have got off to a great start on floor in this final!

Alice Kinsella has scored nearly a full mark more than in qualifying with a beautiful routine, while there was also an improvement for Abigail Martin - the 16-year-old who is still awaiting her GCSE results (is she more nervous waiting for these scores or those results?).

Ruby Evans was just 0.033 lower than on Sunday, so overall they are up on where they were last time. Remember, in Tokyo, they flew completely under the radar and delivered that bronze medal....

What are the 'twisties'?published at 17:39 British Summer Time 30 July

    Gymnastics - women's team final

You might hear the 'twisties' getting talked about on commentary this evening, so what does it mean?

The 'twisties' is thought to be when an athlete loses their spatial awareness or a loss of orientation. It is dangerous because it could lead to serious injury if the gymnast is in the air.

There is no definitive answer to what causes it, but a disconnect between mind and body, and stress, may play a part.

At Tokyo 2020 Simone Biles dropped out of the all-around, floor exercise, vault and asymmetric bars finals, citing how the 'twisties' had impacted on her mental health and skills.

Biles took a sharp breath in before she went but she lets herself smile at the end, and is congratulated by her team-mates afterwards.

It was an 'easier' vault than her Biles II that she did in qualifying but she nails it in style and it's still hard by anyone else's standards.

It feels like that was a big thing to get past - this after all is where her participation in the team final ended last time around, when those twisties took hold in Tokyo.

Three out of three for Team USA on vault. The crowd are going insane. They will be very happy with how they have started here. Not the most difficult routine from Simone Biles, not risking any kind of injury or fall. Playing it safe as it were, she will be very happy with that.

It's a really unforgiving format in the final. Every score counts (in qualifying it is three of four so you can discard the lowest).

And on vault, where Simone Biles will soon go, it's over in seconds - a 25m run-up, off the board, on to the table and then off.
