Over on the floor, China's Ou Yushan falls in the middle of her routine. The 20-year-old is ever the professional and gets up straight away to complete her turn on the apparatus but that was a heavy hit on the knee.

In second place at the moment is Algeria's Kaylia Nemour, who was born in France and is proving very popular with the home crowd here.

She switched allegiance to her father’s native Algeria in 2022 after a dispute with the French Gymnastics Federation.

Following multiple knee surgeries in 2021, she was cleared to compete the following year by her own doctor. However, the French team doctor refused to grant her clearance, while the national governing body wanted her to move from her local gym.

Bars - on which she has just scored a huge 15.533 - is her best piece so she may struggle to stay as high as second for long. Algeria have never won an Olympic medal in gymnastics - so even if she doesn't win one in the all-around, she will have an excellent chance of changing that in the bars final.

History at stake for Bilespublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 1 August

They've just shown a video on the big screens of what gymnastics looked like at the 1924 Paris Games...well, one major difference is there were no women competing. It was only at the next Games in 1928 that women made their competitive debut.

A century later and we are about to have a history-laden final.

It is the first time two female Olympic all-around champions will be going head-to-head for a second title, with Rio 2016 winner Simone Biles facing American team-mate Sunisa Lee, the Tokyo 2020 gold medallist.

If Biles wins, she will become the oldest winner of the event since 1952 when the Soviet Union's Maria Gorokhovskaya took gold at the age of 30.

She would also become the first gymnast to win non-consecutive all-around Olympic titles.

And all that is on top of the chance for Biles to have a new skill named after her, but we'll come on to that in a bit.
