For Becky Wilde just making the final is remarkable after she had surgery on her forearms in September.

“When I actually think back, it’s unbelievable,” she said.

“If you’d have told me I’d have made an Olympic final after that, I’d never have believed you. It’s always a dream but to have actually done it, it’s still sinking in.

The start line is 2,000m away to my right - so far away I can't actually see it.

The big screens help spectators in the huge stands near the finish keep up with the early action but you can tell when the crews are coming as a wall of noise gradually sweeps across the Var-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium.

It takes just over six minutes of gruelling effort to reach the finish line and potential glory.

Spain's Maria Perez takes a brilliant silver with Australian Jemina Montag taking the final spot on the podium.

"Most days it's just absolute carnage to be honest, it really is getting through the days - you can plan a perfect day and it very rarely happens."

Helen Glover's words will strike a chord with thousands of parents with young children, although few of them will be aiming for an Olympic medal this morning.

The 37-year-old is competing at her fourth Olympic Games in Paris having twice retired, only to come back each time thanks to the lure of the five rings.

Now Cornwall's Glover, who has a five-year-old son and four-year-old twins (a boy and a girl) with husband and TV naturalist Steve Backshall, is hoping to add to the pairs gold medals she won at London 2012 and in Rio four years later - but she knows it will not be easy.

"Every Olympics has has been a really different goal and motivation for me," she told BBC Radio Cornwall.

"The first Olympics winning gold was the absolute dream, and then in Rio to sustain that and back that up with another gold was what drove me.

"Then I left the sport, I had four years off, retired, started a family, had three children and then coming back in that final year was almost more of a statement, saying 'I can do this, anyone can do this after having kids'.

"Now this one is a little bit more about I've shown that it can be done, now let's do it as well as possible."

Results in Tokyo three years ago were extremely disappointing for the British rowing team but this year is already very different.

After failing to win a gold in Japan, the GB women’s quadruple scullers won a dramatic gold on Wednesday to get the British team off to a flying start in Paris.

Today they have boats in three finals and Helen Glover's women’s four have an outstanding chance of striking gold.

The men’s coxless four of Oli Wilkes, David Ambler, Matt Aldridge and Freddie Davidson qualified second for their final.

Before that, Mathilda Hodgkins-Byrne, another mother, and Becky Wilde have a chance in the women’s doubles sculls final.

Meanwhile, Daire Lynch and Philip Doyle from Northern Ireland are bidding for a medal in the men’s double sculls final.

Here’s the schedule for the finals:

    10:18 BST – women’s double sculls final

    10:30 BST – men’s double sculls final

    10:50 BST – women’s four

    11:10 BST – men’s four

    Men's triathlon

Great Britain's double Olympic gold medallist Alistair Brownlee speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about Alex Yee's win in the triathlon: “I shouted at him ‘Go on. Just keep focused, keep pushing, anything can happen.’ I was amazed as anyone to see him surge past him.

"I think Hayden looked like he was starting to struggle in those last few kilometres.

"In the final few hundred metres it starts all going wrong. At that point, the tides turned and it’s one of those moments in sport where it’s not just physical, it’s the mental as well and I think at that point Hayden was racing for second."

I was watching the fencing and, no disrespect to the skill levels involved, but it seems predicated on a one second burst of activity. So I’m up for that.

Becoming fit enough to finish an endurance race would be enough to finish higher than last place in an event with extreme fatigue like the marathon. It would certainly be a tough 12 months of preparation!
