Day five saw a yield of a further five medals for Team GB.

Two gold medals in 15 minutes was the highlight of morning, triathlete Alex Yee (pictured above crossing the line) and the women's quad sculls rowers won the fifth and sixth gold medals for Team GB in Paris.

There was a BMX silver for Kieran Reilly, while Beth Potter won triathlon bronze and Andrea Spendolini-Siriex and Lois Toulson took bronze in the diving.

That takes Team GB to 17 medals overall - their highest tally after five days of an Olympic Games.

Team GB had 16 after five days in Tokyo, which by far surpassed any previous tallies.

    Gold medal events:

    Artistic gymnastics (women's individual all-around), athletics (men's and women's 20km race walk), canoe slalom (men K1), fencing (women's foil team), judo (women's -78kg, men's -100kg), rowing (women's double sculls, men's double sculls, women's coxless four, men's coxless four), sailing (men's and women's skiff), shooting (men's 50m rifle 3 positions) and swimming (women's 200m fly, men's 200m back, women's 200m breast, women's 4x200m free relay).

    Highlights

British rowers are used to heaps of gold medals – more than 30 of them in Olympic rowing. GB were the top rowing nation at Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016. Then came Tokyo and not one gold. They were 14th in the rowing medal table, which was a shock.

Team GB won women's quadruple sculls gold on Wednesday to bring hope for a better Games in Paris. On Thursday, Helen Glover will hope to lead an impressive women’s four in the final at 10:50, while the men’s four won the world title in both 2022 and 2023. Their final is at 11:10. The space of about half an hour could play a huge role in deciding if this Olympic regatta is a GB return to form.

The rowers are not the only ones who had a Tokyo to forget. Joe Clarke did not make the team despite being the defending Olympic champion in K1 slalom canoeing. Now, he is back and will hope to be a big factor in the Paris final from 16:30.

The women’s all-around gymnastics final at 17:15 could see some remarkable history being made. If they are both healthy and nominated for this event, American duo Simone Biles and Sunisa Lee could make this the first women’s all-around final in which the past two Olympic champions have competed. Biles won in 2016, followed by Lee in 2020. If either of them wins gold, they will be the first woman to win multiple Olympic all-around titles since Vera Caslavska in 1964 and 1968.

Watch: Reilly's silver medal runpublished at 22:17 British Summer Time 31 July

    Men's BMX freestyle final

Team GB's BMX rider, Kieran Reilly landed another silver medal for the team, but who is the 23-year-old?

Reilly, who grew up in Newcastle scored 93.70 in his opening run to put him in second place at that point - he was guaranteed a minimum of a bronze medal by the time he appeared for his second run.

Reilly has been building towards this Olympic medal moment since taking up cycling at the age of five.

He landed the world BMX freestyle final championship title last year in Scotland, but he just misses out to a gold medal as Argentinian Jose Torres Gil topped the podium scoring 94.82.

To finish off his run, Reilly stepped back and produced a bike drop - a little bit like a 'MIC drop' but a bit more dramatic.

Oh, and to top it off he's got a very impressive mullet.

Definitely Yee's Gold in the men’s triathlon! Brits living in Australia, letting the little ones stay up to see him finish, looking at one point to be battling to keep silver position and then for him to come through and get Gold! Limbs everywhere!! Was hard to settle them down for bed in the end, but definitely worth the memories!

Canada won the Olympic gold in women's football in Tokyo and could still retain their title, despite being involved in a hugely controversial campaign.

They were deducted six points for spying on a rival team's training session - something which led to coach Bev Priestman being banned for one year. However, on the pitch Canada have won all three matches to advance as Group A runners-up, behind leaders France.

Canada beat Colombia 1-0, while two goals from Marie-Antoinette Katoto helped France to a 2-1 win over New Zealand.

The quarter-final line-up is as follows...

    • United States v Japan (Saturday, 3 August - Parc des Princes, 14:00 BST)
    • Spain v Colombia (Saturday, 3 August - Lyon, 16:00 BST)

France's Leon Marchand created history in front of a wild home crowd with a golden double.

In an remarkable, ear-splitting atmosphere, Marchand achieved the rare feat of winning two golds in the same swimming session.

The 22-year-old first reeled in reigning champion and world record holder Kristof Milak of Hungary to win the 200m butterfly title and, less than two hours later, returned to the pool to cruise to victory in the 200m breaststroke and secure his third gold of the Games.

No-one had previously completed the men's 200m butterfly-breaststroke double and Marchand won both in Olympic-record times.

The United States quest for a fifth straight Olympic gold medal remains on track after securing a place in the quarter-finals with a win over South Sudan.

The Bright Stars, 33rd in the world rankings, were no match for the 16-time champions and were defeated 103-86 at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium.

USA led from the first quarter and never looked back, with Miami Heat's Bam Adebayo registering a team-high 18 points and seven rebounds.

For South Sudan, Nuni Omot led the way with a game-high 24 points.

Sifan Hassan, the 2023 London marathon winner, has announced she is going to attempt an historic treble at Paris - defending her 5,000m and 10,000m Olympic titles and winning the marathon.

"I am excited to announce I will run the 5000m, 10,000m, and the marathon here in Paris," Hassan, who was born in Ethiopia, said on social media. "I am a curious person looking forward to the challenges, and trying to find out what is possible. I love the journey as much as the challenge."

The 31-year-old Dutchwoman is aiming to become the first woman to win gold in the three events at a Games. Czech great Emil Zatopek won three men's events in Helsinki in 1952.

Hassan became the first athlete to win medals (two gold, one bronze) in the 1500m, 5,000m, and 10,000m in Tokyo and he has now dropped the shortest distance for the marathon.

I believe it is a slow pool and Pan Zhanle has just broke the world record by half a second.

This has been one of the best night's of swimming that I have been at.

When Michael Phelps went to Beijing he won eight gold medals and got seven world records. In the one he didn't get a world record he got an Olympic Record - he is undoubtedly the goat [Greatest of all time].

But, on individual performances Marchand is better.
