When you talk of Michael Phelps, when you talk of Ian Thorpe, you are now going to have to talk about Leon Marchand because that is one of the best things I think we have ever seen.

The fans in this arena are just trying to breathe this in, to appreciate it. They have been at a night where history has been made. We are watching the birth of a phenomenal, world class, Olympic swimmer.

Leon Marchand's arms are aloft in the air and he is milking it, rightly so.

He has taken on two specialists - the greatest butterflier that has ever lived, Kristof Milak and then Zac Stubblety-Cook - he beats them both.

I feel lucky to be here tonight.

I cannot believe he has beaten the specialists on those disciplines on the same night. I wouldn't believe it would be possible to do in three days apart nevermind two hours apart!

    Mark Foster
Former freestyle world swimming champion on BBC TV

There is only one word for that from Pan Zhanle: Ridiculous! Absolutely ridiculous. There has been so much talk of a 'slow pool' and I just want to know how quick that would have been in a 'fast pool.' That was unreal.

    Adrian Moorhouse
1988 Olympic 100m breaststroke champion on BBC TV

You don't win a 100m freestyle by a body length. That was just outstanding from Pan Zhanle. The crowd is stunned. He has been a bit hit and miss at this meet, came 22nd on the 200m freestyle, did the relay. 46.40 on the freestyle in a 'slow' pool.

That gold for Pan Zhanle takes China back to the top of the medal table at Paris 2024, knocking hosts France down to second.

China have 19 medals overall with France boasting 26 but China have nine golds to France's eight.

Scandal-hit Canada to qualify?published at 21:45 British Summer Time 31 July

Football - women's group matches: Colombia 0-1 Canada, New Zealand 1-2 France (both after 80 minutes)

Despite having six points deducted for spying on a rival team's training session - something which led to coach Bev Priestman being banned for one year - Canada are closing in on qualifying for the quarter-finals.

They won their first two matches and currently lead Colombia 1-0 with 10 minutes or so to go. If the results stay as they are, Canada would advance as runners-up.
