    Women's triathlon

Defending champion Flora Duffy of Bermuda is currently leading the way.

That medal in Tokyo was Bermuda's first and only gold in the Olympic history. The 36-year-old struggled with a knee injury last year but has started very well here.

Team GB's Beth Potter is fourth after the first lap with Georgia Taylor-Brown in 11th, 28 seconds off the pace.

Beth Potter has been to an Olympics before. But realised in Rio that she wasn’t good enough to win a medal as a 10,000m athlete.

So what did she do? Quit her teaching job, moved to Leeds, and became a triathlete. Now she goes into this race as world champion and with a bit chunk of metal in her sights.

Her story is worth a couple of minutes of your time…

    Women's triathlon

After a rapid start, the current is really making the triathletes work now.

They're six minutes in now but there may be some repercussions from the first couple of seconds with a number of athletes appearing to dive in before the starting pistol went off.

The men's and women's individual events are contested as straight medal races, timed continuously with transition areas for clothing and equipment changes following the swim and cycle legs.

The Olympic triathlon distances for both men and women are as follows:

    • 1500m swim
    • 40km cycle
    • 10km run

Competitors start from the Pont Alexandre III bridge in view of the Eiffel Tower, swim 1,500m in the Seine then run up a set of steps to start the 40km bike course, which includes some cobbled stretches. Lastly, there is a 10km run.

    And they're off!

Perhaps the most talked about event so far at this Olympics - for all the wrong reasons - but at last we can forget about water quality, excessive rainfall and the like.

The triathletes launch themselves into River Seine and away they go.

What a difference a day makes in Paris...

This was the view from the BBC commentary position when I visited yesterday morning, when temperatures reached around 35C - although I can confirm it felt even hotter than that.

    Pont du Alexandre

And this is the moody Parisien skyline this morning.

The drizzle has come to a stop, for now at least, allowing the journalists to emerge from the shelter of the media centre and take their laptops out in to the stands.

But yesterday's good weather has helped ensure we do have races on - and that is all that really matters here.

The streets are lined with excited - and expectant - crowds. And, after a 24-hour delay, it's almost time to get the Olympic triathlon events under way!

'We are delighted to have two races today'published at 06:59 British Summer Time 31 July

    Women's triathlon

    Vicky Holland
Olympic triathlete bronze medallist on BBC TV

We've got two triathlons coming today. We are all delighted and we woke up to the news that we were going to get two races and we are really excited for that.

We know the water quality was improving everyday and yesterday it didn't quite meet the threshold but was going in the right direction.

It is simply a matter of another 24 hours of the water being flushed through and I think that is why we now have a situation where it is a little bit more acceptable and below the threshold for any nasty bacteria in there so the athletes should hopefully be safe.

This is a course with some pretty slick roads and on the first day when there were rainy conditions which involved a lot of crashes. These athletes will be taking precautions when turning on corners during the cycling.

Great Britain have got to be optimistic of adding to their medal tally this morning and world champion Beth Potter will going for gold in the women's triathlon.

Tokyo individual silver medallist Georgia Taylor-Brown and world top 10-ranked Kate Waugh. France’s Cassandre Beaugrand and Emma Lombardi are also contenders for gold at their home Games.

Will Team GB have another reason to cheer at the end of this race?

It’s happening everyone! It’s actually happening!

Both the men's and women's Olympic triathlons will go ahead this morning after latest tests found the River Seine’s water quality has improved to sufficient levels.

It’s a damp, dull morning in Paris, but the athletes won’t care following doubts over whether the triathlon events could even be held in light of yesterday’s postponement of the men’s race.

Greasy roads aside, they may even prefer this to yesterday’s scorching temperatures.

Honestly, I just can’t keep up with the Parisien summer at all.

Here's how the medal table stood at the end day four of Paris 2024.

Japan lead the way with seven gold medals ahead of China and Australia on six apiece.

Team GB climbed into sixth place behind Team USA thanks to the two gold successes. The first was won by Nathan Hales in the men's trap final, and the second came in the last race of the day in the pool on Tuesday, as Great Britain's men's 4x200m freestyle relay team successfully retained their title from Tokyo.

  14. What was the issue with the water?published at 06:37 British Summer Time 31 July

Swimming in the River Seine was banned for a century because of the water quality.

Tests in June still showed levels of E.coli above the upper limits imposed by sports federations.

Earlier this month, tests showed the river was clean enough for swimming but heavy rain in Paris on Friday and Saturday has led to a drop in quality.

Tests are carried out daily, with all readings over the past few days showing the water quality was below an acceptable standard.

The quality of the water is now deemed to be high enough for the races to take place.

Let's start with some good news - the triathlon is going ahead this morning.

The men's event was postponed yesterday and organisers had said there was only a 60% chance that it would be able to take place today as a result of the water quality.

However, results from the latest water analyses, received at 03:20 on Wednesday, were deemed compliant by World Triathlon.

The women's race will begin at 07:00 BST with the rescheduled men's race following at 09:45 BST.

Great Britain's Alex Yee is one of the favourites for gold in the men's race, while team-mate Beth Potter is the reigning women's world champion.
