The word on poolside is that Adam Peaty has left the door open to carrying on. I don't think a lot of us expected that coming into this meet. Being a bit vulnerable earlier in the week and not winning that gold medal, I think he has the taste for it again, and let's hope he does. The British team is much better with Adam Peaty in it than him exiting through the side door.

Adam Peaty speaking to BBC TV about potential retirement after Team GB came fourth in the men's 4x100m relay final: "I think tomorrow is never promised, so why worry?

"If my heart wants it, my heart wants it and I will absolutely sign that contract with myself to do it. But that may be a long way away.

"I think I have got to step away from the sport because it has just hurt too much this time, it really has.

"It could have been my last one [swim] here. Mel [Adam's coach] has got an incredible future ahead of her in Australia and the right talent will head her way. I don't know what the answer is.

"If my family needs me, they need me. If they don't and they want me to do it... you can't lie to your heart and if the heart doesn't want it, the heart doesn't want it but I'm going to enjoy today instead of worrying about tomorrow."

This has been a week like none other for me, where the racing has come to the fore. Every race in the pool has been great and good news for Europe, they have dominated the men's side of the schedule.

That was the best Lilly King we have seen all week. I don't know what problems she has had in her individual races but she turned that race around for the USA. Once she had started her leg no one else was in contention.

Regan Smith, Lilly King, Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske throw their arms up into the air in celebration and rightly so.

Smith, King, Kelsi Dahlia and Simone Manuel set the previous world record - 3:50.40 seconds - in Gwangju, China in 2019.

Tonight's quartet have shaved almost a full second of that time by coming home in 3:49.63 seconds.

A fine way to sign off a great meet at the Paris La Defense Arena.

Christopher Morales-Williams of Canada and Sri Lanka's Aruna Dharshana Singhapurage are the next two across the finish line, qualifying for Tuesday's semi-finals.

Just one more heat to go. GB's Charles Dobson features in that one.

    Swimming

    Steve Parry
Olympic bronze medal swimmer on BBC Radio 5 live

Britain have had a purple patch in the last couple of Olympic Games in the pool. Winning eight medals in Tokyo reset expectations for the team.

It comes down to one person, Adam Peaty. He has carried the team so much in the past that it has added two medals. When you stick a world record performer like him in the mixed medley relay and the medley relay, you would automatically pick up two medals.

And with the utmost respect possible, how do we get the women's team contributing to this medal tally? At the moment it is just the men that are bringing in the hardware.

On changing his tactics: "Everyone knows my tactics for the past couple of years. We're playing with stuff.

"It means a lot to end on a high note for us [Team USA]."

Big news! Steven Gardiner, the reigning Olympic champion, has not lined up in the men's 400m heats.

Ill-timed injuries have stalled the Bahamas athlete's momentum since he won gold three years ago.

We don't know the reason for his withdrawal yet, but we'll make sure to update you when we do.

Quincy Hall, the American champion, wins heat three in 44.28 seconds.

It's not the colour Daniel Wiffen was aiming for but adding a bronze to a gold medal in your first Olympics is no mean feat.

There's no tears on the podium this time, but he's already spoken with a steely resilience about trying to put the result right at the next time of asking.

Hats off to Bobby Finke, by the way, that was an incredible swim and this place exploded with noise!

Next up for Wiffen is the Open Water 10km marathon in the River Seine on Friday. He's never raced in open water before but is aiming for a medal. Now that's confidence!

'Ups and downs for Brits in the pool in Paris'published at 18:29 British Summer Time 4 August

    Swimming

    Karen Pickering
Swimming & diving expert on BBC Radio 5 Live

There have been ups and downs for the Brits in the pool at these Paris games. A highlight was the 4x200m relay team retaining the title that they won in Tokyo, they had a job to do and they did it.

We also had the agony of fourth place finishes for Freya Colbert and Max Litchfield, which is heart-breaking.

And then to miss two gold medals, twice by two one hundredths of a second, these sorts of results completely change the fortunes of a team, from one gold to three. It is so tough because the margins are so fine.

On the whole we have had some good individual performances, some great races and lots of swimmers in the mix, which is really exciting to see. Yet a couple were agonising to watch.

Massive respect between the competitors and that is the last Olympic race for any male swimmer for four years.

They know the hours that are spent in the darkness, you know what goes into the sport.

Massive respect for the journey they have gone through together at the Olympics.

As Adrian says, that is America's first time tasting defeat in the men's 4x100m medley relay.

The USA were unbeaten in 64 years!

They did not compete in the 1980 Moscow Games due to a boycott but had never been beaten in the men's medley final dating back to the inaugural event at the 1960 Rome Games.

It took something special from China's Pan Zhanle to halt them.

Brilliant swim from China, that last leg from Pan Zhenle was off the scale.

That is American's first ever loss in the men's 4x100m relay. The first time they have ever been beaten in the pool on this medley relay.

I know Britain came fourth but they were brilliant, well done.
