Wow! It is the end of an era! Never has the United States not been the most dominant nation in this men's all round medley relay. It is over. China have beaten them and they have done so comprehensively, Pan Zhenle absolutely flying down that last 50 metres to seal the victory.

No matter how much of a favourite you are, you still need to go out and perform. The nerves will have been jangling a bit. He has had a couple of days in the village just to settle down. After what he did in London he is the favourite.

He did all the running in the first few 250 metres, running hard through 200 metres and into the bend and then saw it out. Really good performance from Matt Hudson-Smith. He's just got to stay calm, cool and healthy. We have to wrap him in cotton wool because he has had so many injury problems.

Gold medallist Sarah Sjoestroem speaking to BBC TV after winning the 50m freestyle: "I didn't even dream about winning two golds at my fifth Olympic Games, it's unbelievable.

"I tried to go into this Olympics with a mindset that I can live on my consistency which has been at a very high level. My lowest level is still very good so I tried to have that in my mind all the time.

"I tried to win the 50m freestyle with that mindset I guess."

Here we go then. The men's 4x100m medley relay, the penultimate race in the pool at these Olympics.

Team GB have opted for experience and that unquantifiable thing, big-night bottle, in opting for Duncan Scott over Joe Litchfield on the butterfly leg.

Litchfield has a comfortably better time this year over 100m. Scott loves nights like these, however.

There's huge anticipation among the home fans as French swimming sensation Leon Marchand eyes his fifth gold of the Games. He and his teammates are up in the 4x100m medley relay at 19:10 local time (18:10 BST).

Marchand is helping to unite his homeland, I'm told by one Parisian, Thanh. His exploits in the pool have helped to "smooth everything over" for the French population, which is reeling from a political crisis that has left them without a prime minister.

Political cartoonists and social-media users have even joked that 22-year-old Marchand himself should become the next PM.

So popular is he that ticketholders for other events in Paris have confessed to tuning into his races on their phones even while their paid event is taking place.

The emergence of individual heroes like Marchand at the Olympics is as old as the Games itself. But one specialist in contemporary French politics tells me the feelgood "Marchand-mania" is unlikely to last.

“We can expect an immediate return to a fractured political field and a disgruntled electorate as soon as the Games are over,” says Emile Chabal from the University of Edinburgh.

Team GB are on the hunt for gold in the pool and they can call on six-time Olympic medallist Adam Peaty once again.

Peaty tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday - just one day after winning silver in the 100m breaststroke - and he missed the mixed 4x100m medley relay heats on Friday.

He returned to the pool on Saturday morning for the men's 4x100m medley relay heats, alongside Oliver Morgan, Joe Litchfield and Matt Richards as Team GB clocked a time of 3:30.16 seconds and finished second to the USA.

Peaty remains part of the quartet that are set set to take to the pool in a few minutes, with Morgan and Richards also retaining their places but Duncan Scott has been drafted in for Litchfield.
