    Men's 100m semi-finals

Team GB's Zharnel Hughes spoke to BBC TV after missing out on a place in the men's 100m semi-final: "Obviously I'm disappointed but I know where I am coming from. This is my third 100m. Not making any excuses. Today just wasn't my day.

"To try to get through the rounds of the Olympics after injuring my hamstring with a grade two tear last month wasn't that easy but I dug deep to give myself a try and that's what I came here to do.

"I don't have to focus on the 100m anymore, just focus on the 200m and I'll be fine."

'I can't be too hard on myself'published at 19:32 British Summer Time 4 August

    Men's 100m semi-finals

Team GB's Louis Hinchliffe spoke to BBC TV after missing out on a place in the men's 100m final: "It's obviously not the result I wanted but I can't be too hard on myself so yeah it's ok.

"I'll definitely use this experience and I'll learn from my mistakes so it is back to the drawing board and we'll work on it hopefully and come back stronger next year.

On his execution: "I let the race get too far ahead of me. I was a bit out of it at the start. I didn't set myself out too good. It's not too bad, we'll work on it."

On working with Carl Lewis: "He's been great, giving me a lot of guidance. It's been good to have him in my corner."

On his family being at the Olympics: "It's good to be close to home. It's good to run in front of them, I have not run in front of them for a while. It's been great to have them."

That's a massive disappointment for Zharnel Hughes, who had spoken all year about rewriting his personal history in Paris.

Three years ago Hughes false-started in the Olympic final and it took him some time to really recover from that. But he achieved redemption on the global stage last year, winning world bronze.

Unfortunately, his preparations for these Games were disrupted by a hamstring injury in June, which denied him the chance to compete at the European Championships and defend his British titles.

While Hughes was adamant that had not had a huge impact on his training, it is clear that his fitness is not quite there as he walks off the track aware he will not get the chance to set the record straight.

The conclusion of that third semi-final also means the wait is over for Marcell Jacobs.

He finished third in his semi but a season best time of 9.92 seconds is seventh fastest overall and offers the Italian the chance to defend his crown later.

Jacobs was 0.12 seconds slower than the fastest overall time posted by Jamaica's Kishane Thompson.

Outside of ten seconds for Zharnel Hughes.

He was really slow in his rise from his set position, he did react but in the first two, three and four strides there was no power there. By the time he did get into stride Kishane Thompson had already done the damage.

Kerley comes in second, while GB's Zharnel Hughes is sixth.

There will be no British interest in the final.

Ah, it's not to be for Louie Hinchliffe on his Olympic debut.

But what a debut it has been, with a victory over world champion Noah Lyles to celebrate.

The final proves a step too far this time, but everything suggests he will only get better and better from here.

The 22-year-old has had a sensational year, achieving all he has off the back of just a single winter training block under the guidance of Carl Lewis in Houston.

Already the sixth-fastest man in British history, he will be back. And, before he departs Paris, there is the small matter of the 4x100m to think about.
