What do abbreviations next to times/ scores mean?published at 18:05 British Summer Time 4 August

You may have noticed little two or three-letter abbreviations next to an athlete's score or time during this first week of the Olympics.

Now the athletics has begun, you are certainly likely to see them quite often.

So, for the uninitiated, here is a quick guide to what they all mean...

    WR: World record

    OR: Olympic record

    NR: National record

    PB: Personal best

    SB: Season's best

    DNF: Did not finish

    DQ: Disqualified

Bobby Finke has already been on the podium.

I loved the way he swam it, he went out hard. Daniel Wiffen wanted to go for that world record as well but it probably just surprised him how much Bobby just went for it straight away.

Bobby's turns were beautiful, as well as his big kick off the wall. He replicated the speed down that last 100m.

It was him against the clock, he knew that he had got that medal and I think he really really wanted that world record and this place erupted.

I feel for Daniel Wiffen because he will have that disppointment that he wasn't in the mix for the gold in the closing stages, but in a few hours or days he will look back and know it was a wonderful experience. And he is still an Olympic champion.

    Walk to Stade de France

It's a glorious Sunday evening in Paris. Surely we will not see a repeat of last night, when the heavens opened before the women's 100m final.

It looks and feels like perfect conditions for some rapid times as the conclusion of the men's 100m is played out. Always one of the most anticipated events at any Olympics, expect plenty of drama throughout the semi-finals and final.

What a night to have a ticket for. The trains are rammed as thousands flock to the Stade de France from central Paris, and there is a real buzz of excitement as fans make the walk to the stadium

    Stade de France

The stadium announcers and DJ are up to their usual tricks, getting the crowd involved in singalongs and also getting the French fans pumped by showing the latest medal table on the big screen.

The medal ceremonies are under way before the Sunday night action begins with the men's 400m heats, with big cheers for each medal winner as they get their moment in the limelight.

The stage is set for another blockbuster night of athletics. But who will be celebrating on the purple track as they cross the finish line later?

A last gasp men's gold medal in the pool for the United States of America and Bobby Finke has done it in such style. It was made all the more beautiful by Gregorio Paltrinieri and Daniel Wiffen putting in the yards at the start and racing so hard.

Bobby Finke wins gold and he has broken the world record!

That is a brilliant swim, that is a gutsy swim.

I am so, so pleased for Finke. What a race that was.

    Swimming - men's 1500m freestyle final

    Steve Parry
Olympic bronze medal swimmer on BBC Radio 5 live

How on earth has Bobby Finke done that? He has completely turned his race plan on its head. He normally goes out slow and hangs on to the lead, hitting in the final few laps, but from the moment he got in the pool he was racing. He looked like he was spriting the 1500 metres.

Finke sets new world recordpublished at 17:57 British Summer Time 4 August

    Swimming - men's 1500m freestyle final

That was an incredible pace from the outset by America's Bobby Finke.

Victory never looked in doubt but a new world record was touch and go for a moment.

The record time of 14:31.02 seconds set by China's Sun Yang at London 2012 is no more.

Finke touches the wall in 14:30.67 seconds.

I think Daniel Wiffen is swimming this race in 500 metre stints. he has gone fairly slow on the first one and I would like to see him build into it. Bobby Finke does have quite a sizeable lead already at this stage.

Like a 10,000 metres on the track this race is the best one on the pool programme at this level. It is so tactical. These guys are in absolute agony already, their lungs will be bursting and their arms will be getting heavier with each stroke.
