Here's just how tight it was.
You can see Noah Lyles (third from bottom) touching the red line with his chest - that's the body part that determines the final time - taking gold.
Kishane Thompson (third from top in the yellow jersey) has to settle for silver.
Men's 100m final
American Noah Lyles speaking to BBC TV after winning the men's 100m final: "You couldn't have asked for a bigger moment. A guy in biomechanics comes down and before I came out here, he said it was going to be this much, that's how close it is going to be and gosh was he right.
"I had to take every round as it was and I was a little upset after the first round so I came with the aggression and after I ran that 83 and I was done with the aggression. My sports therapist told me you need to let go, you're holding on. Let go and release it."
On his final thoughts in the starting blocks: "Thank you God!
"I hope you guys like Noah because I got a lot more coming!"

One of the traditions of Paris 2024 is that the winners get to ring this bell after claiming gold.
The bell will be moved to the Notre Dame, the famous Parisian cathedral, after the Games to be suspended in one of its towers.

Five thousandths of a second...
In years gone by, before we had this kind of technology, they might have just handed out two gold medals on an occasion like this.
It's almost impossible to made a decisive call with the naked eye but Lyles' chest crosses the line first - that's what determines their final time.
See what you think!

Four-time Olympic gold medallist athlete on BBC TV
Noah Lyles had a bad Tokyo and since then he's really been looking for big moments. He wants to be a global superstar. He talks about Usain Bolt and the type of person he was. He's talked about his sport and voiced his frustration about how it doesn't give you that platform.

Sydney 2000 Olympic heptathlon gold medallist on BBC TV
Noah Lyles is able to back it up. He has been amplifying the need for people to take this sport more seriously, deliver and respect the athletes for what they deliver which is sensational entertainment every single time.
To do this here with the amphitheatre of the lights, the drama, everything is just brilliant.

It is all about delivering your best when it really matters and that is what Noah Lyles has gone and done. 9.79, a personal best and it was phenomenal from him. A deserved Olympic champion.

Andrew: Blisteringly quick athletes coupled with a blisteringly quick track. That was the tightest 100m Olympic final I can ever remember seeing.

That was incredible. Noah will be able to say "people doubted me", but he put himself in a position to be doubted, he wasn't good in the heats or semi-final.
But he put it all together in the final. Yes he was at the back of the pack but when he gets into his frequency he can't be matched.
And you guys had it right, Thompson tightened up at the end and that was down to experience.

Here's the breakdown of timings for that final. Season bests and national records aplenty...

Two-time world 110m hurdles champion on BBC TV
Wow oh wow, he has produced something special.
To me and most of the people in the world, they have to take their hats off to Noah Lyles because they didn't expect that.
Noah Lyles having a lot of fun as he celebrates that sensational gold - producing when it mattered after failing to win in the heats and semi-finals.

In Noah Lyles' own words, he is one of the best closers, finishers in the business and he demonstrated that today.
You've got to believe that you are the absolute best of the best and he did.
He is here to create a legacy and he has put the first stamp down on that legacy by taking this title in such imperious fashion.
Walking, running, sprinting into the history books in that time is just simply incredible.

Dave Bailey: That's margins, inches at the highest level of elite sport
Adam: Noah Lyles came from nowhere to win that. Last 50m was insane
Happy for Lyles! First of three golds this Olympics I suspect. And good job he’s got this in the bag before Hinchliffe dominates the next two or three Olympic cycles!

Absolutely [the best 100m final I have seen] bar none. It was so open, there were so many great athletes.
It lived up to it, we had this amazing race where you could throw a blanket over the finishing line. We didn't even know who won for a few minutes.

Men's 100m final
Noah Lyles talked the talk before that race, jumping up and down, waving at the crowd for more noise.
He's backed it up. After an iffy heat and an unremarkable semi-final, he put on a show in the final and he's the new Olympic champion.
The 27-year-old is also the first American champion in the men's 100m since Justin Gatlin at Athens in 2004.
