So Josh Kerr’s showdown with Jacob Ingebrigtsen comes a couple of days sooner than anticipated. The two big dogs of the men’s 1500m meet in the first semi-final tonight and it will be fascinating to see how both play it ahead of Tuesday’s final.

Kerr has had his eyes on this Olympics since he was a wee boy in Edinburgh. He came here at Christmas, talked his way into the stadium, stood on the winning line and pictured what winning gold would be like. He wants this badly.

But how did he reach this point? Give this a few minutes of your time to find out…

'I cannot see anyone taking it from Hodgkinson'published at 20:08 British Summer Time 4 August

    Athletics - women's 800m semi-final

    Colin Jackson
Two-time world 110m hurdles champion on BBC Radio 5 Live

The key thing for Keely Hodgkinson is to believe in herself and her capabilities. Don't think about anyone else. Have that real faith in what you have been doing, how your training has been going, how you have raced all year.

She needs to realise she has been doing the 800m for ever and ever and ever and she is ready to do it here on this big occasion. If she holds it all together with her time of 1.54 then I can't see anyone else taking that from her.

"I've said it all year, I really want to upgrade my silver. I think I am in the best shape physically, mentally and emotionally to do that that I have been ever.

"I just hope that I can really put that together tomorrow and let's see what we can do."

    Athletics - women's 800m semi-finals

    Allison Curbishley
Former GB 400m runner on BBC Radio 5 Live

Huge, huge disappointment there for Jemma Reekie. After what she did at the Diamond League in London, second quickest in the world this year smashing her personal best, I don't know what she did there.

She looked so comfortable but she was playing to the orchestration of Tsige Duguma who just grinded it out, dug deep and Jemma had nothing left. She tried so hard to pump the arms but she had nothing left.

Mahuchikh and Olyslagers in gold medal contentionpublished at 20:02 British Summer Time 4 August

Athletics - women's high jump final

It's down to Ukraine's Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Australia's Nicola Olyslagers for the gold medal.

Mahuchikh came into the Games in fine form, setting a new world record of 2.10m at the Paris Diamond League meeting in July.

But Olyslagers is the only person to have beaten Mahuchikh so far in 2024, soaring over 1.99m with her final attempt to claim the world indoor title in March.

Ukrainian Iryna Gerashchenko and Eleanor Patterson of Australia will share bronze - they both cleared the first three heights at the first attempt before failing to get over 1.98m.

At the end of the day Keely Hodgkinson wants to win the gold. She did not need to put the burners on there but she did it. She is feeling it and she is dying just to let rip and go for it.

She is so in control, she is loving her time here and that final cannot come soon enough.

Phoebe Gill and Jemma Reekie have fallen short in their bids for an Olympic 800m final place.

They will have very different emotions, with Gill, still just 17, enjoying her Olympic debut, while Reekie was hoping to improve on her fourth-place finish in Tokyo.

There is no doubt Gill has a seriously bright future ahead, and she can take inspiration from the next British athlete to take to the track.

Yes, here is Keely Hodgkinson, who three years after winning silver on her Olympic debut is in Paris with her sights locked on gold. Fingers crossed.
