Djokovic v Alcaraz - men’s gold medal match

    Amy Lofthouse
    BBC Sport in Paris

Tennis fans will remember Novak Djokovic’s first service game against Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final was a struggle.

It went on for 14 minutes and ended up with Alcaraz breaking serve and taking a frankly dominant first set.

None of that this time round, though - a solid hold to 30 from Djokovic, his serve looking good.

I just think there is so much riding on this match. Of course the gold medal, but there’s history for Djokovic. He’s won every Grand Slam multiple times, he’s won the Davis Cup but he’s never won Olympic gold so this would complete the golden slam.

But for Alcaraz, against a guy 16 years older than him, can he be first to that Olympic gold. He’s already won four Grand Slams and it’s not out of the question over the next two decades when Djokovic is long retired, that Alcaraz could match his achievements.

Neither player has dropped a set in reaching this gold medal match so something will have to give today.

Novak Djokovic races to 40-0 up on serve in the first game of the match and despite a delicate drop shot helping Carlos Alcaraz get it back to 40-30, the 37-year-old Serbian secures the hold.

Joy at the table tennis arena for the hosts, where 17-year-old Felix Lebrun has won men's singles bronze for France.

The teenager defeated Brazilian opponent Hugo Calderano in straight sets, 11-6 12-10 11-7 11-6.

What a moment for Lebrun, who is in tears of joy as the roof is raised by thousands of French fans in the arena.

The gold medal match, between Truls Moregard of Sweden and China's Fan Zhendong, follows next.

    Here they come!

I would say this crowd is overwhelmingly in favour of Carlos Alcaraz. There’s Spanish flags everywhere you look and he gets a huge roar as he walks out for the warm up.

Alcaraz is much bouncier at the net, jumping in the air, getting that nervous energy around. Novak Djokovic, by contrast, strolls over, game face on, energy all contained.

This, genuinely, should be a belter.

What a match we've got at Roland Garros this afternoon as Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic go head-to-head - again - in the men's singles final.

It's just three weeks since they last met in the Wimbledon final with Alcaraz claiming a convincing straight-set victory.

That was the sixth time they have played each other and it's currently three wins apiece.

The 21-year-old Spaniard has won two of the three finals the pair have contested but Djokovic came out on top in their only previous match at Roland Garros - in the 2023 French Open semi-final.

Djokovic's only previous Olympic medal was the bronze in Beijing 16 years ago, while Alcaraz knows he has secured at least silver at his first Games.

After a frantic start, things have settled down a touch.

Overnight leaders Jon Rahm and Xander Schauffele still lead, nearest challenger Tommy Fleetwood still challenges.

Hideki Matsuyama is the latest mover. The Japanese star jumps level with GB’s Fleetwood on 15 under - one behind Rahm and Schauffele - after a trio of birdies on four, five and six.

Playing partner Rory McIlroy remains stuck on 12 under for now.

Today means a lot for Novak Djokovic.

He’s lost his past three Olympic matches to top-5 opponents, and I can remember how absolutely gutted he was after his 2016 Rio loss to eventual silver medallist Juan Martin del Potro.

He does have an Olympic medal - bronze from Beijing in 2008 - but gold would mean so much to him. And he has a lot of support in the crowd today; I can see a group with Serbia-branded cowboy hats on to my left.

Will Djokovic's wait for an Olympic gold medal come to an end or will it be yet another milestone moment in the young career of Alcaraz?

It's a stunning 158km course, finishing with that spectacular backdrop of the Eiffel Tower.

Great Britain have three cyclists competing: Lizzie Deignan, Pfeiffer Georgi and time trial silver medallist Anna Henderson.

I think these performances just highlight what an amazing team we have - not just the riders but the support team around them as well.

They have done an incredible job to come out and perform like that. Carl Hester is just an inspiration and we all aspire to be like him.

Hester is the older man in the group so he helps them to gel and keeps them together. Becky Moody came out here in her first Olympics ever. Lottie Fry did an amazing job. It just shows how he's brought his knowledge together.

Daryll Neita, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live after progressing to the women's 200m semi-finals: "It feels like I literally went to sleep here last night because I was here until late so it’s been a quick turnaround but I was prepared for it. My coach had said that on the night of the 100m final you can do one Instagram post and then you have to go to sleep, and I followed his instructions.

"I feel good today but I’m definitely excited to get a good 24 hours until the next round.

"It felt great but I want to do enough to just qualify safely through to the next round. That’s what’s important today.

"Coming fourth was bitter-sweet. I’ve had a little sleep on it and honestly I’m really proud of myself. To go to Tokyo and come last in that final, and to raise the game in the 100m women’s final which is not an easy final to get into, to come fourth gives me confidence and a lot of motivation going into tomorrow."

After failing to make the women's 100m final, Dina Asher-Smith comfortably qualified for the women's 200m semi-finals: "I’m just angry from yesterday to be honest. That’s literally all I can say.

"It was probably one of my easiest 22.2s I have ever run in my life and that’s just testament to the shape my coach and I have worked really hard to get me in.

"Yeah, I was angry but coming down the home straight I was ‘relax, relax’ – it’s fast enough and I’m taking it."

Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy won’t stop believing today.

Both men birdie the par-five third in their consecutive groupings bringing the field home.

But the Team GB and Team Ireland stars aren’t going their own way yet.

Five of the top six leaders also nab a birdie on this short 499-yarder, which has been munched by the field this week.

Fleetwood, Rahm and Schauffele card a full house of birdies on the par-four fourth, too.

Rahm and Schauffele lead on 16 under, with Fleetwood keeping pace 15 under ahead. McIlroy is 12 under.

    I wonder who they’re supporting…

When I tell you it is BUSY at the tennis, I mean it. I had to put all the skills learnt from commuting around the UK to use to dodge and dive my way in.

Everyone wants to be here for the men’s gold medal match. Novak Djokovic, bidding for the Golden Slam, the one prize he has always wanted. While Carlos Alcaraz, the face of this new generation, looks to continue a stonking few months that has seen him win the French Open here at Roland Garros and defend his Wimbledon crown.

Alcaraz was a convincing winner a few weeks ago on the Wimbledon grass. But few things pump up Djokovic more than playing for his country. And he wants this.

I genuinely do not know which way this is going to go.

An extraordinary day of drama here. There were hopes that Great Britain would be in for a medal, but in reality they were rather faint because of the strength of the German and Danish riders.

Looking at the way Lottie Fry and Glamourdale performed today, they were absolutely magnificent. Glamourdale grew in stature when he entered the arena and he put on a wonderful test.

Fry has held her nerve in the highest quality of competition.
