    Athletics - women's 800m semi-finals

    Allison Curbishley
Former GB 400m runner on BBC Radio 5 Live

Jemma Reekie will be absolutely gutted. She was gutted last time around when she missed out on a medal by tenths of a second in Tokyo and finishing fourth. But to come here and not even give herself the chance to go for it again in the final is disappointing.

"I'm in the best shape of my life and I made some mistakes and that's what happens. I just need to go away and think about it."

The scoreboard here is full of letters once again. A personal best for Tsige Duguma who just produced the race of her life, Shafiqua Maloney a national record, third placed Juliette Whitaker also producing a personal best. That semi-final was so, so, so fast.

I cannot emphasise enough that our British athletes are performing well but so are the rest of the world.

BBC Scotland at Stade de France

A devastated Jemma Reekie has just walked right through the mixed zone, stopping just once for the briefest of interviews. She looks like she is struggling to comprehend how her Olympics has ended this way. She dreamed of a medal but now won’t even be in the 800m final.

Poland's Pawel Fajdek claimed bronze in Tokyo and sits third as it stands.

Still another five throws to go...

    Women's 800m semi-finals

    Andrew Cotter

Jemma Reekie was just left looking for pace, looking for something in the home straight that wasn't there.

What a shame that her Olympics will end at the semi-final stage.

Oh no. Jemma Reekie is reeled in by the chasing pack down the home straight.

The Scot arrives in fifth and is therefore won't make the final.

Ethiopia's Tsige Duguma gets the win in one minute 57.47 seconds, with Shafiqua Maloney of St Vincent and the Grenadines in second.

Can Reekie reach final?published at 19:44 British Summer Time 4 August

    Women’s 800m semi-finals

    Richard Winton
BBC Scotland at Stade de France

Jemma Reekie is ranked third in the world in the women’s 800m. So, in theory, she should be on for a bronze medal, right?

Perhaps, but anything can happen around two laps of the track. First, the Team GB athlete has to get through tonight’s semi-finals. She’s the quickest in her race on paper but will she be in the top two on the track?

You have got to add in tactics in 800 metre running. Phoebe Gill is so used running in races where she is winning by miles and now all of a sudden she is racing some of the best in the world.

She has to work out how to make these decisions while running through a field. She pushed the Cuban racer to a personal best, but was pipped on the line.

Gianmarco Tamberi's defence of the high jump gold medal he shared at the Tokyo Olympics could be in doubt.

The Italian has been taken to hospital with a suspected kidney problem, four days before the qualifying event.

In one of the most iconic moments of the games three years ago, Tamberi and Mutaz Barshim of Qatar agreed to share gold after asking permission from the event officials when they couldn't be split.

On Sunday, however, Tambiri posted a picture of himself in a hospital bed and said :"Unbelievable... This can't be true.

"Yesterday, two hours after I wrote 'I deserve it' on social media, I felt a stabbing pain in my side. Emergency room, CT scan, ultrasound, blood test. Probable kidney stone.

"And now I find myself, three days before the event for which I sacrificed everything, lying in a bed, helpless, with a fever of 38.8."

The qualifying competition takes place on Wednesday morning, with the final on Sunday.

Phoebe Gill might still have a chance.

She just needed a little bit more in the tank in that home straight in order to compete.

She's going to stay out there and watch and learn from the next two semi-finals as well.

Mary Moraa of Kenya, the world champion, wins it in 1:57.86.

Phoebe Gill just doesn't have the legs in the home straight and she falls to fourth across the line.

She'll have to wait for the next two semi-finals to finish to see if that's enough to advance to the final.
