Switzerland's Morgane Metraux is the new leader at Le Golf National after a superb second round.

The 27-year-old is seven-under through 17 so far today and nine-under for the week.

That puts her three shots clear of France's Celine Boutier, who is one-over for the day after 13 holes.

Meanwhile, Brits Georgia Hall and Charley Hull are having better days but remain a long way back.

Hall is on the 12th and is currently level par for the round, keeping her at +2 overall, while after a highly forgettable nine-over yesterday, Hull is fairing far better today and is two-under through seven.

    BBC One

Earlier the women's 4x100m relay team spoke to BBC TV after making it through to Friday's final.

Bianca Williams: "It was great. I just wanted to get around safely. We have the crowd behind us, so it is just nice to get through as a team."

Imani Lansiquot: "We just wanted to come out here and focus on ourselves and use the energy of this incredible stadium. We did our job, I am looking forward to Friday."

Amy Hunt: "We have done that change so many times, we are so well drilled. We had to bring together our individual superpowers."

Desiree Henry: "It is so hard to hear, which isn't a bad thing. Amy’s voice is so distinctive so I definitely heard it. The moment I got the baton was all about trying to get to the line first."

I really object to Anon calling this week a ‘nightmare’ for team GB Fifth in the tables with plenty more opportunity with a lot of young talent making their mark. We shouldn’t expect to win golds and we should be happy that we are winning medals in a variety of things.

Johnson-Thompson's in a good place, clearly. She is fit and ready for this.

The year that she won the world title, she cleared 1.95m.

She's ahead of Thiam, the Olympic champion, ahead of the shot put, which is one of her weaker disciplines.

I expect there will be a little to and fro, and she may not be in the gold medal position by the start of 200m later on, but that is where she can claw back plenty of points.

I am really hopeful for her. This looks like really good potential for an Olympic medal.

It came down to who had the most registered hits or the higher value of scoring actions. For example, a spinning kick may be worth five points, and if you've got five points, then the spin would win as that has a higher value.

'My whole world stopped' - emotional van Rouwendaal pays tribute to dog after winning goldpublished at 12:04 British Summer Time 8 August

    Women's 10km marathon swim

After Sharon van Rouwendaal won the gold medal in the women's 10km swimming earlier today, the Dutch athlete spoke to BBC about the emotions she felt after the win.

"In May, my little dog died," she said.

"He needed an operation on his lungs so I gave it to him in hope that we could live after the Olympics together in my house and with my garden. And he had complications after the surgery and he died.

"Then my world stopped and I didn't care about swimming for like three weeks. He was my little baby.

"But my dad said that you've been away from him for like seven years because of competitions. Do one more race and give it everything and swim for him. I got a tattoo and thought 'let's try it.'

"I swam for him with my whole heart. I won it for him."

Van Rouwendaal's other Olympic gold medal came in Rio in 2016. Her dog was called Rio.
