    Ireland 10-5 South Africa

A great start to the Games for Ireland in the rugby sevens with the men's team coming out on top in a tense battle against South Africa in Pool A.

Tries from Terry Kennedy and Jordon Conroy were enough to cancel out an effort from Selvyn Davids at the other end.

New Zealand and Japan are up next in Pool A.

One of the more unusual Olympic stories of the day broke earlier, when it emerged that Canada women's football manager Beverly Priestman would not take charge of her side's Olympics opener against New Zealand after two members of her backroom staff were sent home for allegedly flying a drone over the Kiwis' team training session.

Jasmine Mander, Priestman's assistant, has been sent home along with "unaccredited analyst" Joseph Lombardi.

"The Canadian Olympic Committee stands for fair play and we are shocked and disappointed," said the COC.

"We offer our heartfelt apologies to New Zealand Football, to all the players affected, and to the New Zealand Olympic Committee."

Straight out of the Marcelo Bielsa playbook that one!

Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar says the Slovenian Olympic Committee (OKS) not selecting his girlfriend Urska Zigart helped sway his decision to withdraw from Paris 2024.

Pogacar, who won his third Tour title on Sunday, pulled out of the Games with "extreme fatigue", the OKS said in a statement on Monday.

The Giro d'Italia-Tour de France double winner competed in a criterium race in the Netherlands on Tuesday.

Speaking before that race Pogacar said of Zigart’s omission: "It’s not the main reason, but for sure it didn’t help.

"I think she deserves her spot. She’s the double national champion in road race and time trial.”

Another Spain win. They just love winning football matches this summer. The 2020 silver medallists start their new Olympic campaign with a 2-1 win over Uzbekistan, thanks to goals from Sergio Gomez and Marc Pubill.

Uzbekistan will cause the others teams in this group problems, they had chances to equalise near full time. The drums are still being banged and their fans are still going mad, I don’t think they will stop anytime soon.

Some breaking news from the world of tennis. World number one Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Paris Games due to tonsillitis.

"I am saddened to inform you that unfortunately I will not be able to participate in the Paris Olympic Games," Sinner wrote in a post on X.

"After a good week of clay training I started to feel unwell. I spent a couple of days resting and during a visit the doctor found tonsillitis and strongly advised me against playing."

And what about rugby sevens, which also starts today... which team beat Great Britain in the bronze medal match in Tokyo?

After practice today, GB’s male gymnasts found time to take some photos. For some, like Harry Hepworth, it’s their first Games, while for Max Whitlock it’s a fourth.

Judging by the levels of excitement among the team-mates on the mat, it’s just as thrilling however many times you’ve been.

“I really am cherishing the moments because this is my last one,” Whitlock told BBC Sport.

“Looking back at photos, you’re always grateful when you look back at these little moments that you capture.

“I feel like, not this but almost, I’ve taken stuff for granted, or maybe breezed through it in previous Olympics and this time I’m just trying to soak it all in a little bit more. It feels a little bit more special.”

Argentina 2-2 Morocco, Uzbekistan 1-2 Spain

In the 16th minute of added time, Argentina have made it 2-2

They were two down to Morocco, but piled on the pressure late on. Argentina twice hit the crossbar in a frantic move before Cristian Medina headed in.

However, there appears to be an incident and the players have gone off the pitch.

In the other match, Spain held on to defeat Uzbekistan 2-1.

Andy Murray has been speaking to the media in Paris, as he prepares for his last dance before retirement.

The two-time Olympic champion said it is the "right time" for him to retire from tennis after the Games - and he is "happy" with the decision.

Murray, 37, said recent injuries, which prevented him playing singles in his Wimbledon farewell earlier this month, mean he is now content with ending his career.

"I didn't feel that way a few months ago when I thought that this is when I was going to stop," said the Scot in his first interview since the announcement.

"I didn't want to. Now I want to.

"I know it is the right time for me."

My player of the match has been this Uzbekistan fan dressed in a replica goalkeeper shirt. He’s hardly watched any of the game, he’s just been coordinating the drumming and singing.

At one point, he was shouting across the technical area, not to the managers but to an opposite group of Uzbek fans to get them in sync. His nation have definitely been second best in the second half but the fans are keeping them in it.

    Into injury time.

    France 12-12 USA

We have our first draw of the Rugby Sevens competition with hosts France being held by the USA.

Boos ring around the Stade de France after the USA opted to kick for touch after the buzzer - happy to accept the draw - rather than have a run at one final play and go in search of a win.

Not the start that France or Antoine Dupont, who opted to skip the Six Nations in favour of moving to sevens and representing his nation at a home Olympics, would have wanted.

With France also in football action later, it is not surprising to see L'Equipe - France's most renowned daily sports newspaper - giving double billing on the front.

Rugby icon Antoine Dupont shares the cover with soccer captain Alexandre Lacazette.

Inside, there is a double page spread which highlight Dupont's commitment to the Olympics, having pulled out of the Six Nations to focus on the smaller format and win gold.

My GCSE French is very rusty but even I can get the gist of the headline: 'Dupont: L'Insatiable'.
