Have spent today so far nervously watching badminton, synchronised diving, women's rugby and mountain biking which, to be honest, are not sports I would normally watch ... but that's what the Olympics can do to you.

Max Whitlock has been working on the three apparatus in the last year to make sure he can be a part of the team final, it is not just the pommel horse and thanks very much. To have someone of his experience in the team, alongside three newer members, their first Olympics, to have his experience to draw on is instrumental.

Very unexpected fall from [Team USA] Jagger Eaton. The bronze medallist from Tokyo said he wanted to go for gold in the park and street skating events here in Paris but he will be under pressure now for the second run after that fall.

Eaton is currently seventh of eight in the final.

Sora Shirai and Yuto Horigome - both of Japan - are first and second respectively, with Slovakia's Richard Tury in third.

At the start of the gymnastics event the stadium announcer always runs through the apparatus to explain them to those who might be watching for the first time...

"Daring" and "unforgiving" feature heavily in the adjectives.

It's not just the apparatus but the format of the final itself where there is no room for error - three gymnasts compete on each piece and every score counts (in qualifying four compete but only three scores count).

GB’s order will be pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, horizontal bar, floor.

Women's hockey: Great Britain 0-0 Australia (end of first quarter)

    Helen Richardson-Walsh MBE
Olympic gold medal winning hockey player on BBC Radio 5 Live

“It will be a tough one. Australia are and always have been good at hockey. Even though they're not the best at the moment they always bring their best at the Olympics."

"Team GB are going to have to bring much more than they did yesterday against Spain if they want to beat this Australia team, and they really need something from this game.

“Great Britain will just be thinking about qualifying for the quarter-finals. If they have to play the Dutch then so be it. Australia are good but they're not unbeatable, and we want to see a better performance from Great Britain today."

Women's hockey Great Britain 0-0 Australia

As expected, the three-time Olympic champions Australia started strong and dominated midfield from the off.

GB did, however, star to find their groove in the later stages of the first quarter and had two good chances from penalty corners.

But it remains goalless after the first at a very sunny Yves-du-Manoir Stadium.

British Cycling CEO Jon Dutton paid tribute to gold medallist Tom Pidcock, calling his achievement "phenomenal".

Dutton said: "Everyone at British Cycling is thrilled with Tom Pidcock's phenomenal achievement of winning gold in Paris.

"Securing successive gold medals really speaks to Tom's dedication, talent and unparalleled determination. He showed that in spades today, coming back from adversity during the race."

Pidcock's gold is the first for Great Britain cycling at these Games and builds on the silver earned by Anna Henderson in the women's time trial.

Dutton hopes the joy of cycling Pidcock showcased in the mountain bike final can encourage others to get involved.

Tom Pidcock has been speaking in a press conference, shiny gold medal hanging around his neck.

Asked if it was his most emotional victory, he said: "I think it's definitely my most emotionally draining victory. The build-up was such a long time in my head. The waiting all week, the training, it all builds up and then you're on the start line. To deal with that takes so much energy and focus, it’s really difficult."

On defending his title: "Since winning [in Tokyo] I have wanted to come back and defend my title.

"I went in as an outsider, it's totally different to come in and defend a title, to have that pressure, that expectation. It's a completely different challenge, much harder I think."

On his puncture: "I knew that the first thing was to stay calm, I didn't really let it affect me. All I could do was stay calm and come back as best I could. I wanted to come back to the front, that's all I cared about.

On the slow wheel change: "There's no point in stressing about it, that's not going to help me get back to the front. I was lucky it happened early on, so there was time to come back to the front."

Final preparations are under way at the Bercy Arena for the gymnastics men’s team final.

Great Britain will be starting on pommel horse – if you really zoom in you can see Jake Jarman’s name… he will be the first to go.

GB are paired up with Ukraine for the rotations on the six apparatus.

Favourites China and Japan are together for what is expected to be the gold-medal battle.

It’s really the bronze medal that is up for grabs for the rest, with GB, the USA and Ukraine the main contenders in this eight-team final. GB qualified in third place for the final… so there is cause for some Team GB optimism.

Canada appeal against six-point deductionpublished at 16:04 British Summer Time 29 July

    Women's football

Canada's women's football team have launched an appeal against having six points deducted in their Olympic group after a drone was used to spy on a rival team's training session, but they haven't appealed against coach Bev Priestman's one-year ban.

The final decision of the Canadian Olympic Committee and Canada Soccer's appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) is expected at about 11:00 BST on Wednesday.

A Cas statement on Monday said Canada seek a decision "either cancelling or reducing the points deduction".

Cas added: "The applicants do not request relief with respect to the one-year suspensions imposed on the officials."

Canada are third in Group A, on zero points following the deduction, but victory over Colombia in their final group game would secure qualification for the quarter-finals.
