Burgess finished fourth at the Tokyo 2020 Games and missed out on a medal by 0.16 seconds, so he will be hoping for a clean semi-run to book his place in the final later today.

He’s done it! Novak Djokovic shows Rafael Nadal who is boss.

Not quite as emphatic as it looked it would be, but Djokovic won’t care.

A job very well done by the 37-year-old Serb.

He’s beat his old foe in what could well be the final meeting of their enduring rivalry.

Most importantly, Djokovic continues his bid for Olympic gold - the one honour which has so far eluded him.

Tom Pidcock finished with a time 1:26.22, just 0.09 seconds clear of Victor Koretzky after one of the most titanic battles in Olympic cycling history.

Koretzky looks visibly emotional as he hugs his family by the finish line, but he can be incredibly proud of his silver medal - the Frenchman gave absolutely everything.

South Africa's Alan Hatherly took bronze, Pidcock's Team GB team-mate Charlie Aldridge finished a very respectable eighth.

We're down to our final four in the eventing individual jumping final, with two British riders among them.

Tom McEwen is next up, followed by Laura Collett, as both seek to secure their second medal of the day following team gold.

They entered this final event in third and fourth respectively, so a medal or two is very much a possibility.

Emotional scenes at the finish line.

Tom Pidcock almost collapses into the arms of his family and partner, while Victor Koretzky is in tears as he gets a hug from his young child.

As they were on the final climb, there was almost a collision as Pidcock worked his way around some trees to get in front of the Frenchman. Both managed to stay on their bikes but it opened up the gap for Pidcock to sprint through and take the winning position.

In the last three minutes or so, the pair went back and forth from first and second position at least four times. It was proper jaw-dropping, edge-of-your-seat drama, Olympic sport at its best.

What a comeback from Tom Pidcock!

Inside the last few metres, he overtook his rival from France, Victor Koretzky. It was a brilliant move. Pidcock went left and he just made up the ground and he took him on the inside.

Before you knew it, we were on the home straight and Pidcock crossed the line for the gold medal.

The most dramatic gold that we might see for Britain over the course of these games. Pidcock retains his gold.

That was amazing! He has won it in hugely dramatic circumstances. an audacious manoeuvre almost at the final corner.

    Tom Pidcock, take a bow!

The most heroic performance from Pidcock to retain his mountain bike title.

He slipped down to ninth after that puncture, 40 seconds behind the leader. Somehow, he made up all that ground and time to catch up with the leader Victor Koretzky - what a warrior.

It was the most intense battle in the final lap, with Pidcock and Koretzky neck and neck in a tussle for gold that ebbed and flowed constantly. But Pidcock holds his nerve to get over the line first in the most astonishing performance.

    Wow!
