The first Irish athlete to defend their Olympic title was hammer thrower Pat O'Callaghan in 1928 and 1932.
Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy managed to achieve that feat in the men's lightweight double sculls a few days ago, but that's where the list ends.

Team USA cruised to victory in their men's basketball quarter-final, beating Brazil 87-122 to set-up a semi-final with Serbia on Thursday.
Their side, who have won the last four Olympic gold medals, features 12 NBA All-Stars, four NBA MVPs and six NBA champions, who combined have 11 Olympic appearances and own 10 gold medals.
France and Germany will contest the other semi-final.

Kellie Harrington has been a little bit of a late burner in the Irish context and has been a bit forgotten outside of Ireland because she has been in Katie Taylor's slipstream for the guts of a decade.
Kellie had to box at a higher weight level because Katy had 60kg nailed down as the best boxer we have ever seen. So Kellie was 30 years old by the time she won gold in Tokyo, she is 34 years old now.
It makes you wonder what she might have achieved had that roadblock not been there.

That's the French message inscribed on one side of the Court Philippe-Chatrier.
On the other side, the English translation reads "Victory belongs to the most tenacious".
They certainly don't come any more tenacious than Ireland's Kellie Harrington, who is going for back-to-back Olympic golds.
China's Wenlu Yang defeated Harrington way back in 2016 in the World Championship final.
Is this her time for revenge?
