Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi says the defence of his Olympic high jump title is "all over" as he continues to suffer from a kidney issue.

The 32-year-old was taken to hospital last weekend just three days before the qualifying round was due to begin.

He recovered in time to qualify for tonight's final (18:00 BST), but says he is still in "excruciating" pain and does not know whether he will be physically able to compete.

He wrote on Instagram: "It's all over. I hoped until the end, I believed in it despite everything that had happened.

"Last night at 5am I woke up because of the same excruciating pain as a few days ago. Another renal colic. Five hours have passed and the pain still hasn't gone away.

"I'm speechless, I'm truly sorry to death. Will I still go on the platform tonight? Yes, but I really don't know how I'll be able to jump in these conditions."

In one of the most iconic moments in Tokyo three years ago, Tamberi and Qatar's Mutaz Barshim agreed to share gold after asking permission from the event officials when they could not be split - having recorded the same clearances.
