James: THAT WAS FABULOUS! Botswana taking it to the USA. Tebogo so very nearly got to Benjamin but he was too strong. What a race! Another British bronze.

MGceltic: What a run by Botswana. Tebogo is one hell of an athlete.

That was one of the quickest races we have ever seen.

Olympic record time for the USA to hold on to the event which they have really made their own but my goodness Botswana and Tebogo at the end made them race every inch of the way.

They just can't believe it! It's going to be at least a silver for Kate Shortman and Izzy Thorpe! They are hugging and crying!

Their brilliant routine has a theme of 'rising phoenix' - this is in tribute to the change in the judging system, which might sound a bit dry - but it has changed everything for them.

The scoring system, overhauled last year, became less subjective and played more to their technical strengths. Shortman had considered quitting before the change.

So it all makes perfect sense!

They have shot to the top of the standings and are guaranteed a first ever GB medal in the sport.

    What colour will it be?

    Two teams to go.

New Zealand's Hamish Kerr has just sprinted across the infield, his arms in the air, lapping up the crowd's appreciation.

Amazing celebrations from the 27-year-old - and the New Zealand media around me here!

After that moment, and between the relays, we have a lights show, dance anthems, the crowd going wild as they're shown on the big screen.

It's going off on closing night at the Stade de France!

At last, we have a winner in the men's high jump.

New Zealand's Hamish Kerr is the man to keep his nerve in the jump-off to seal gold, while USA's Shelby McEwan - who rejected the chance to share the title - has to settle for silver.

Qatar's Mutaz Essa Barshim, the joint-champion in Tokyo, takes bronze this time.

We will hear more about that soon, I am sure.

Wow, USA won as expected but not in the expected manner!

Botswana pushed them all the way, and it needed an Olympic record time from the Americans to seal yet another athletics gold.

GB meanwhile get their second bronze of the night, Charlie Dobson did enough to hold off the chasing pack. A fine run from the Brits.

  13. Olympic chief Bach to step down next yearpublished at 20:00 British Summer Time 10 August

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach says he intends to stand down after the end of his second term next year.

The German lawyer, who has been in charge since 2013, surprised members at a session during the Paris Games, saying he would not continue despite being asked to.

An extension would have require a change in the Olympic charter that limits the president to a maximum of 12 years - a first eight-year term and a second four-year term, that he himself had helped draft.

"After 12 years in the office of IOC president our organisation is best served with a change in leadership. New times are calling for new leaders," he said in an emotional speech.

The new IOC president will be elected in March 2025 at a session in ancient Olympia and will take over in June of that year, Bach said.

No member has yet openly campaigned to succeed him.

Right, we break away from that bizarre high jump final to bring you the penultimate event on the track - the men's 4x400m.

Nope, Hamish Kerr also clatters into the bar at 2.36m.

This has not been the most impressive high jump final - it has been several minutes since anyone actually cleared a jump - but it is certainly a tense watch.

Now the bar will be reduced to 2.34m...

So, we have a situation in the men's high jump final.

Both Shelby McEwan of USA and New Zealand's Hamish Kerr have failed three times at 2.38m. As the only two men remaining, they have the option to share gold as happened in 2021...

But they have decided to keep competing! No sharing here.

Both will get one more jump at 2.38m.
