The dream final nearly didn't happen.

The United States, who have had an iron grip on this event since it was introduced, trailed Serbia throughout the vast majority of their semi-final.

Until a masterclass from Steph Curry, ably assisted by LeBron James, saw them scrape through.

Big names for the big games.

Talking of which, Scottie Pippen - one of the 1992 Dream Team - has just turned up.

    Taiwanese fans

I'm told there are a group of 200 Taiwanese fans here who have come to cheer on Lin Yu-ting in her gold medal bout.

Lin is one of the two boxers competing in Paris having been disqualified for reportedly failing gender eligibility tests last year.

"It is really unfair. It is all political," these fans tell me.

The International Boxing Association said Lin "failed to meet the eligibility criteria for participating in the women's competition, as set and laid out in the IBA regulations".

The International Olympic Committee has allowed her to compete.

For the medal matches, the athletes come out of a different entrance.

They walk out at the top of the Grand Palais staircase and stand and wave to the crowd, before walking down the stairs, through the tunnel and out to the mat.

It's really reminded me of the bit in Beauty and the Beast where Belle walks down the staircase. But I am quite old.

We can say you remember it from the 2017 remake, Amy.

    Taekwondo - men's +80kg final

Caden Cunningham speaking to BBC One after securing at least silver a silver medal: “I enjoyed it, tough fights is what I started taekwondo for.

“So far I’ve beaten three world champions, three Olympic medallists, one champion so it's a good day. I feel good. Something I’ve been working towards I knew I could do it. It was a bit tough but what's the point in coming if it's not a tough day.”

On the venue: Yes it's absolutely amazing, I'm feeling it and it's making me happy when I’m fighting but lock us in a room and I'd do the same thing. I love the supporters but it's my job to fight so no matter where it was we get it done.”

On what he will do between now and the gold medal match later: “Chill, eat a banana, drink, smile and warm up.

“Ready to win or lose, proud to be here, the final is going to be a good match. I plan to come out victorious, so happy days.”

USA eyeing fifth successive goldpublished at 20:24 British Summer Time 10 August

    Basketball - France v United States - men's gold-medal match

The USA have, unsurprisingly, been the dominant force when it comes to basketball at the Olympic Games - winning a medal in each of their 19 appearances.

Of those 19, 16 have been gold with one silver (1972) and two bronze (2004 & 1988).

They have taken gold at each of the last four Games and are on track to make that five after a dramatic comeback to beat Serbia in the semi-finals on Thursday.

With a star-studded roster, including the likes of LA Lakers' LeBron James, Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics' Jayson Tatum, the USA fought back from a 13-point deficit in the final quarter to come through a thrilling encounter.

Tonight, the USA face hosts France who can call on San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama.

Wembanyama was the first round overall pick for the Spurs in 2023 and was named NBA Rookie of the Year for 2024.

It's almost time for the first final of the night at the boxing.

In this one is Lin Yu-ting, one of the two boxers who were banned from last year's World Championships over their gender eligibility but have been allowed to compete.

The other boxer, Imane Khelif, won her gold medal last night. Standing in Lin's way of featherweight is Poland's Julia Szeremeta.

No-one was really talking about 20-year-old Szeremeta beforehand but now she finds herself in an Olympic final.

Earlier this year she even stood in local elections and lost. She'll hope that's not an omen.
