The Spanish fans are making the most noise here as they try to help their side get back into the game.

It seems to be working too but a solid stop from Ollie Payne keeps another probing attack out.

The opening ceremony was very good, shame about the rain. Paris is a great city. But to lift the Olympic flag upside down is - if my French expression is correct - a bit of a "Faux pas".

The great Palace of Versailles. The home of King Louis XIV, or the ´Sun King’, as he’d prefer.

Words that bring chills to many a former A-Level history student.

I feel like I recall doing pretty well on that topic. It was the tribulations of Charles I that really did the damage to my grade.

Anyway, here I am, lucky enough to be at this symbolic French landmark, just two trains, one bus and a decent cross-country walk to the west of Paris. White trainers were not the correct footwear.

The weather has not been kind and it’s a damp and gloomy start to day one at Paris 2024.

But this is a quite spectacular venue for Olympic sport and the equestrian action is safely under way this morning.

The eventing is first up - beginning today with the dressage phase - and competing for GB are Tom McEwen (on JL Dublin), Laura Collett (on London 52), and Ros Canter (Lordships Graffalo).

McEwan is first up for GB and completes his routine to warm applause as spectators continue to arrive.

It’s a strong start, the best of the day so far!

Gareth Furlong, the Welshman, has stepped up and he hits it straight through Luis Calzado's right leg and into that bottom corner as Great Britain double their lead.

It's a long drag, a whip of the stick and the Great Britain bench are delighted.

It just changes the complexity of the game.

Great Britain lead thanks to Nick Park.

Park beats Spain's last defender and then calmly lifts the ball over the Spanish keeper.

That should settle GB down after Spain threatened to take the lead.

That's the end of the first 15-minute quarter.

Hello from a damp diving centre. This venue is out in the Saint-Denis suburb, just over the road from the Stade de France which you can see in the background of the picture above.

It was quiet when I arrived, people scurrying to avoid the rain, but the atmosphere is building inside.

In a couple of hours time Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen could be holding Team GB's first medal of the Games.

The Spanish team are a really young side, they love to play great hockey. They like to play back to front, very Barcelona football team style.

Max Caldas, the coach, has got them playing a vibrant form of hockey but they are young. I think GB should take this one. It's going to be tight but GB should take it.

Great Britain, captained by veteran David Ames, are under way in their red shirts.

The men are seeking their first Olympic medal since 1988's famous gold medal. They've been on an upward curve since Paul Revington took over as head coach and are ranked second in the world. Spain are ranked eighth.

It's two pools of six and the top four go through to the quarter-finals, with the gold-medal match on 8 August.

And it's four 15-minute quarters with five rolling subs allowed.
