The swimming is over but there are still loud chants of "U-S-A! U-S-A!" at La Defense Arena because their men's freestyle relay quartet are about to get their gold medals.

This place will be electric tomorrow. We have French superstar Leon Marchand in action plus Adam Peaty going for his third straight Olympic gold.

The relays just bring something out in these athletes. Even if you are not swimming that well individually we just see some magical splits happen when they come together as a team. It just lifts you, you feel responsible for the rest of your team and it gives you that bit extra.

'Frustrating to come out on the wrong side of the medals'published at 21:18 British Summer Time 27 July

    Men's 4x100m freestyle relay final

Team GB Matt Richards speaking to BBC TV: "It is frustrating, we really wanted to try and get into the medals tonight, so it is tough to have come out on the wrong side of it. I thought we all put in a great effort, all four of us, after competing this morning as well. We couldn't have asked for much more, an honest effort and we move on to tomorrow."

On the 4x200m: "The relays are a huge opportunity for us, we really want to get after it and put ourselves up against the best. We will give it our all."

Great Britain definitely had a chance at a medal here.

I don't want to be too harsh but I would put it down as a missed opportunity.

If you do contrast it, we had our best games in over 100 years at the last Olympics and now we are clinging on by a thread here with Adam Peaty.

If Adam Peaty can somehow win gold tomorrow, we will have forgotten about this first day...

'Not the start we wanted but we move on'published at 21:13 British Summer Time 27 July

    Men's 4x100m freestyle relay final

Team GB Duncan Scott speaking to BBC TV: "Individual performances don't really matter when you are part of a team. It shows how far we have come in the 4x100m that we are disappointed with fifth. It is the highest GB have finished in god knows how long. We have to hold our heads high, we all have some exciting events to come this week. It is not the start we wanted but I am sure we will make of that what we will and move on."

Strength in depth in relays: "It is difficult for us, we didn't know who was going to be left out after the swims this morning. Whoever it was we knew that we were going to have quality in the final. We just fell short there but we have more chances in the rest of the week."

Earlier today, Team GB's Seonaid McIntosh and Mike Bargeron failed to reach the final of the 10m rifle mixed team, finishing 26th out of 28.

Both saw this event as a warm-up for the 10m individual events which get under way tomorrow, and the 50m event next week for which McIntosh is world number one.

“It was very hot!" McIntosh told the BBC's Lewis Coombes. "It was really good though, the crowd was nice. Not my best shooting ever, but not my worst either, so I'm happy with it.

“We went in thinking nothing major was going to happen in this one and saw it as a bit of a warm-up for both of us. Hopefully, it’s helped us get a bit of the nerves out and we’re ready for the next one.”

Team Ireland's Rhys McClenaghan is a double world champion and now he wants Olympic gold.

He has just qualified in first place with a score of 15.200, level with the USA's Stephen Nedoroscik but the gymnast from Northern Ireland takes top spot due to his higher execution score.

Team GB's Max Whitlock, who won gold in Tokyo three years ago as McClenaghan made a mistake in his final routine, was third with a score of 15.166 - narrowly behind the leading pair.

McClenaghan, 25, is one of Northern Ireland's biggest medal hopes and has moved one step closer to his dream with a strong display.

Guinea thought they had taken the lead against Thierry Henry's France but it has been ruled out by VAR for offside... familiar right?

So it remains goalless in that game and also in the match between Japan and Mali in Group D.

Earlier today the United States beat New Zealand 4-1 and Israel lost 4-2 to Paraguay.

Elsewhere, Argentina and Spain beat Iraq and Dominican Republic 3-1 respectively, while Morocco lost to Ukraine and Uzbekistan were narrowly defeated by Egypt.

    Men's 100m breaststroke semi-final

Team GB's Adam Peaty speaking to BBC TV after winning tonight's 100m breaststroke semi-final: "It may be an Olympic final tomorrow but it will be an absolute privilege to be out there after what we have both been through. This sport is so testing, so testing, but you can't beat that [points to the pool] really. Great crowd. I enjoyed it. I'm loving it again, so what else can you add except a chocolate cake?"

On his son in the crowd: "Don't even talk about my son, it makes me cry! He goes, 'Daddy, are you the fastest boy?' That's what he says, even if I haven't seen him for two weeks, that is all he cares about. I guess I just want to be the 'fastest boy' tomorrow, keep it simple!"

On his preparation for the final: "Recovering. There's a lot to work on still technically. It is really tough on that back end. I know this field has been a bit slower, all respect due. This is the way the Olympics work. It ain't about a time here it is about the races."

France thought they were on course for another gold medal. Earlier on it was gold in the men's rugby sevens for their first gold of the Games, but now it has been heartbreak in the fencing.

Auriane Mallo-Breton led 7-1 over Vivian Kong Man Wai of Hong Kong in the women's epee individual final. But Kong Man Wai produced a stunning fightback to clinch a dramatic gold medal, winning 13-12 in overtime.

Mallo-Breton had dominated the first period and stormed into a 4-0 lead to the delight of the home fans at the Grand Palais. She then moved 7-1 ahead, although Kong Man Wai closed the gap to 9-6 by the end of the second period and it was level at 11-11 with 97 seconds left and then 12-12 with 36 seconds to go.

Into overtime it went, with Kong Man Wai scoring next to grab the gold, leaving Mallo-Breton with the silver.

Before that, Hungary's Eszter Muhari edged a thrilling contest against Estonia's Nelli Differt, winning 15-14 in overtime to grab the bronze medal.

GB would have been hoping for more than a seventh-placed finish. They wanted to kick on from fifth or fourth place in the previous two World Championships.

Let's get it straight - Australia have set an Olympic record, United States got America's record, China got the Asian record. So you have continental class performances to bring home the medals.

Unfortunately, the rest of the world moved on a little bit and we stayed as we were.

I hope it's not a bad omen for the men's relay...

Aquatics GB have really targeted the relays in preparation for these Games.

The men are strong favourites for the 4x200m freestyle relay later in the meet but should be in the mix here too.

Three of the quartet have won gold medals at the Olympics before.

A big night for Matt Richards in the pool, and his mum and dad are in Paris.

They say they are so proud and feeling nervous as it’s the first time they’ve been able to support him at an Olympics in person. Apparently the support back home in Worcestershire is huge. There are flags up for him in Droitwich.
