Never say never but it would take a huge effort were Great Britain to win a medal in this women's relay final.

Of the quartet, only Anna Hopkin qualified for the individual event.

Allez les Bleus rings around the arena as the French team emerge.

The Aussies are well and truly winding the Americans up on this one.

They have won the last three and they are going to do it again - I can't see anyone getting near the Aussies on this.

It is properly winding the Americans up because it's the number one sport in America. They love their swimming and they can't understand how a country of 400 million people can't beat the Aussies with 20 million people.

The interesting thing is that there is only 0.5 seconds between one to eight, which is close for a 100m breaststroke final considering how dominant Adam Peaty has been in the past. But it is job done today, another night's rest, one more to go. How fast can he go tomorrow?

The 100m breaststroke competition could be the ultimate showdown between a champion and the young pretender.

Peaty is the greatest sprint breaststroker in history, having swum the 14 fastest times of all time and taken gold at the past two Olympics.

Victory in Paris would complete the 'Three Peat' and mean the 29-year-old joins the great Michael Phelps as the only men to have won three consecutive golds in the same event at the Olympics.

But, having been unbeaten in eight years, Peaty has struggled since Tokyo. In his absence a new star has emerged - China's Qin Haiyang.

Qin won gold at the World Championships last year and did so in a time of 57.69 seconds, making him the second-fastest man in history behind Peaty. Peaty has not posted a time that quick since the Tokyo Olympics.

Can he lift himself to go again or will a new champion be crowned?

When is the final? 20:54 BST, Sunday 28 July.

If you are Adam Peaty watching this second semi-final you are thinking, 'this is mine tomorrow.' He's got to be! Qin Haiyang was not on it at all. He tried to bring the speed in off the turn but the rest of the field caught him, he didn't have enough.

The Chinese swimmer is among the favourites to win gold in the men's 100m breaststroke, but it's GB's Adam Peaty who heads into the final as the fastest.

Briton James Wilby misses out on a place in the final, finishing 11th across the two semis.

    Men's 100m breaststroke semi-finals

    Karen Pickering

Adam Peaty had to work hard to catch Nic Fink up. He notoriously doesn't have the best starts, he isn't the quickest away or in that one stroke underwater.

Nic Fink was superb off the start but Peaty reeled him in after the first 50m.

He made them wait before the start, didn't he?! He was playing some games!

Adam Peaty dropped half a second off his heat swim, just steadily improving as he goes along.

He walked out with that confidence, almost as if he had the 'I belong here' feeling, and he does. When you have that feeling and it charges through your body, you can do anything frankly.

I'm actually nervous around how Adam [Peaty] is going to do. He has carried this British team for the past 10 years.

He has always been the talisman and has set the stall out at the Olympics, delivering the gold medal and giving everyone else confidence.

We need a really strong swim from Adam Peaty. We are all so involved in his story, the trials and tribulations he has had over the years, but the competition is coming for him.

I have always maintained that a healthy and fit Adam Peaty obliterates everybody.

But it is the mental side of it as much as the physical side. This morning [in the heats] no one was particularly fast but he was up there and he will be in contention.

This has almost took the pressure off the rest of the French athletes' shoulders because it is there now. France have got one of each medal now.

It has been a great first day for the French, following an amazing opening ceremony last night which kicked things off so nicely. It's nice to follow that up with such great performances in the rugby sevens.

We expected this team to do well, we wanted Dupont to do well, so for them to go on and get the first gold is fantastic.
