Jersey should be better placed than their fifth position in the Championship, coach Alex Rae believes.

The Reds, who began the season with two wins, were beaten 22-21 by Nottingham after a last-second conversion as they suffered their second narrow defeat in as many weeks.

"We feel that's not good enough for the standards that we set ourselves," Rae told BBC Radio Jersey.

"We had higher expectations of ourselves, but that's where we are."

The island side are eight points off leaders London Irish and three points off fourth-placed Doncaster.

"The boys will come back and work extremely hard as they're the ones who can rectify that and start turning those close losses into wins," added former Jersey captain Rae, who joined the coaching staff in the summer.

"I can't fault the boys' effort and endeavour, but our discipline really cost us with some silly penalties.

"We had more than enough ball and possession to win that game easily and we made hard work of it to be honest."
