    FT: Australia 19-27 Lions

    Tom Shanklin
    2005 British and Irish Lion

Finn Russell was amazing, him and Gibson-Park are quality, the way they pull the strings, the time they have on the ball, their decision making makes everyone's jobs so much easier.

This is probably the most competitive Lions squad ever, there is quality everywhere, two amazing half-backs, the power of the pack, people putting in 80-minute shifts in the back row.

Fair play to Farrell, he has nailed it.

  3. 'If everyone's fit, Lions team should stay the same'published at 14:11 British Summer Time

    FT: Australia 19-27 Lions

    Tom Shanklin
    2005 British and Irish Lion

Tom Curry was awesome, maybe a little lucky not to get a yellow in the first half but he brought that engine and physicality. It is going to be tough for any player to break into that team, because the most important thing is winning the Test series.

If everyone is fit, I cannot see it going anywhere else. Andy Farrell's job is to win the Test series and they looked good today.

  4. 'We were pretty desperate'published at 14:09 British Summer Time

    FT: Australia 19-27 Lions

    Lauren Jenkins
    BBC Sport at Suncorp Stadium

Australia head coach Joe Schmidt, speaking about his side: "We were pretty desperate tonight. There was enough demonstration that we're already desperate but we got to be more accurate. And maybe hit the ground running, a bit less submissive early on.

"They're gonna get better too, they've got strength in depth, they came with a plan that got the better of us in the first quarter."

On Tom Lynagh's first start: "No way he lacks for courage, he carried the ball when he needed to and kicked for the line well and found some space from behind."

On Nick Champion de Crespigny's debut: "He's a workaholic and a tough character. He loved it. The tougher it gets the more he loves it. I was really proud in the way he acquitted himself."

  7. 'Lions stepped up after warm-ups'published at 14:01 British Summer Time

    FT: Australia 19-27 Lions

    Tom Shanklin
    2005 British and Irish Lion

The Lions looked battle-hardened, ready and a lot of the clunky stuff in the warm-ups had gone. They looked sharp in attack, they knew what they were doing and Australia ran out of options.

  8. 'Aussies should have played in the warm-ups'published at 14:00 British Summer Time

    FT: Australia 19-27 Lions

    Chris Ashton
    Former England wing

I was so confused why Joe Schmidt did not release his players to play in the club games, get some game time, a feel for what the Lions were about. If you have not faced them, even for 10, 15 minutes, how are you meant to expect the level or have some understanding in the first 20 minutes? You're not. And after 20 minutes, the game was almost over.

  9. 'I think the build-up is more than the game. In the game it's game first'published at 13:58 British Summer Time

    FT Australia 19-27 Lions

    British and Irish Lions

British and Irish Lions fly-half Finn Russell, speaking to Sky Sports: "I think the first half we played really well. Putting them under pressure under the high ball.

"We showed that when we were 12 points up at half-time. We had the territory, we could've scored more points but we're happy.

On his goal-kicking success: "I'd give you a different answer in the warm-up, I missed a few kicks.

"Owen Farrell said to calm down and kick it through the posts, it's not that hard."

On next week: "We expect a different team next week, Joe Schmidt is a great coach so it will be different. We need to get better at individual errors and discipline.

"We’ve had the taste against the Wallabies and we'll be more prepared as to what to expect."

  11. 'Gibson-Park and Russell really controlled the game'published at 13:50 British Summer Time

    FT Australia 19-27 Lions

    Lauren Jenkins
    BBC Sport at Suncorp Stadium

One thing that is a near certainty is that Jamison Gibson-Park and Finn Russell will start Test two in Melbourne.

"The combination of Gibson-Park and Russell really controlled the game and didn't get bored of doing the right thing but when they were able to show the best of themselves they did," Lions head coach Andy Farrell said.

"Finn was cramping a little bit so that's why we brought him off."

  12. 'Australia's players seemed happy to mingle with Lions'published at 13:47 British Summer Time

    FT Australia 19-27 Lions

    Chris Ashton
    Former England wing

In the post match, Australia's players were mixing and mingling with the Lions, they seemed really happy. I cannot get my head around (that), it seems they are almost happy that the Lions are there.

  13. 'Felt like a bonus-point loss at the end'published at 13:45 British Summer Time

    FT: Australia 19-27 Lions

    Tom Shanklin
    2005 British and Irish Lion

It seemed weird that Australia were socialising with the Lions players, weird they kicked the ball off at the end, it was like it was a bonus-point loss.

You want to see an Australia team deliver, to try and (show) some endeavour and they are lacking a lot in attack. At so many stages they were crowding around Tom Lynagh and they didn't know where to go.

  14. 'For a lot of this game it did not feel like a Lions test match'published at 13:42 British Summer Time

    FT: Australia 19-27 Lions

    Chris Jones
BBC rugby union correspondent at Suncorp Stadium

It was a flat atmosphere, a subdued Suncorp and for a lot of this game it did not feel like a Lions test match, sadly. Lions games are normally on a knife edge, the Wallabies were undercooked but it was only in the second half that Australia looked near a top side because for large periods it was a complete and utter mismatch.

The noises out of Australian rugby were not super confident, but their replacements made a big impact, they scored the last try, they have some big names to come back but you felt when the Lions got the ball they could have scored but for their profligacy.

It is surreal for the Lions to win a Test match away from home and for there not to be absolute jubilation and bedlam. This Lions team will feel they have more gears to go through, and it could have been a lot worse but there was plenty of brilliant stuff from the Lions.

In the first half, Genge, Curry, Sheehan, and Russell was absolutely sublime, but that drop off in intensity might be because they were 24-5 up and knew they could get the job done in second or third gear.

Let's hope it explodes next weekend, that they Aussies are way better, the Lions will feel they can be a lot better in Melbourne.

Finn Russell and James Lowe looked good. Maro Itoje, Tom Curry and Jamison Gibson-Park had solid games also. However, the end of the game was very flat from the touring side, with their focus clearly switching to the next Test. Overall a distinctly 7/10 performance at best.

  16. 'Curry and Beirne were absolutely immense'published at 13:36 British Summer Time

    FT: Australia 19-27 Lions

    Lauren Jenkins
    BBC Sport at Suncorp Stadium

British and Irish Lions head coach Andy Farrell was full of praise for flankers Tom Curry and Tadgh Beirne.

Both selections were questioned before the game because of their form on tour.

"Tom Curry and Tadgh Beirne were absolutely immense. Curry put in some shots defensively and Tadgh got the turnover very early doors. It didn't stop there," Farrell said.

"Conan's carrying was very much on the front foot. Those three guys I'm sure they'll be delighted with how they responded to being selected.

"Curry and Beirne are a man of their word and that's what they delivered."

  17. 'Farrell made right selection calls'published at 13:33 British Summer Time

    FT: Australia 19-27 Lions

    Tom Shanklin
    2005 British and Irish Lion

Andy Farrell got the selection bang on. The partnerships really worked, for Finn Russell to have two familiar faces outside him at 12 and 13 was invaluable.

They started so well, and after half-time they started big as well so those two passages of play for me won them the game. They were just too well drilled and powerful for Australia.

  18. 'We played well' - Schmidtpublished at 13:30 British Summer Time

    FT: Australia 19-27 Lions

Australia head coach Joe Schmidt, speaking to Sky Sports: "I felt like the players really dug in, and the score just before half-time was frustrating.

"We played well, and those tries got us back in the game.

"We've got character, but we didn't take the chances we should have.

"We'll make some decisions Monday and Tuesday. It's difficult to say if we'll change personal and how that will impact us."

I have to keep checking that the Lions did actually win after reading some of the comments. Stop being so negative, a win is a win.

  20. 'Lions always in control'published at 13:25 British Summer Time

    FT: Australia 19-27 Lions

    Chris Ashton
    Former England wing

The Lions had complete control from start to finish, in the first half they were so good, way more intense and physical. They all raised their game to the standards we know, they dropped off in the second half but they were always in control.
